2nd Trimester

Leg cramps!

I've been having terrible leg cramps the past several nights.  I've tried stretching before bedtime, and elevating my feet off & on throughout the day, but nothing seems to be helping.  They wake me up several times a night.  I know they're normal during 2nd and 3rd triM, but was wondering if anyone having them often and/or know of any other suggestions to prevent them??

Re: Leg cramps!

  • Tons of water and bananas.  It has seemed to work for me.

Thanks! I definitely need to increase the water.  I already eat a banana a day, lol!

  • Water, potassium rich foods (bananas, potatoes) and maybe some extra calcium might help
  • I'm 26 weeks as well and my pregnancy book brings up leg cramps in this exact week.  I got one yesterday out of the blue but haven't had any since then.  I'm going with the water suggestion from PP

  • Leg cramps or charlie horses are from a lack of Potassium... so bananas is a good thing to add to your diet. If that doesn't work talk to your doc he can give you a supplement if they don't go away on their own. When you get them flex your feet up to your nose and that should help them go away faster. GL! they suck!

  • I eat a banana every day and I have only had one leg cramp and it wasnt that bad. I learned a long time ago when I was in track that my body just required more potassium (sp) or I would have side cramps and leg cramps every time I ran. Also lots of water. Good Luck!
  • i had one for the first time since 1st trimester the other morning.  i forgot how much that sh*t hurts!!!!  i'm still a very firm believer in walking it off.  goes away instantaneously.  like a miracle cure.

  • I have been having them too, waking me up from a dead sleep. My SIL said she drank a glass of chocolate soy milk and ate a banana before bed and they went away. I've tried it the past few nights and it has worked, my legs are still pretty sore during the day now.

  • honestly, the key for me is FLEXING MY FEET!!!  When I'm laying in bed and feel that urge to stretch my legs, I keep my feet flexed and a cramp simply cannot take hold.  If you feel one come on, immediately flex your feet and it will halt the progress.

    Flex your feet, it works!
