Babies on the Brain

Tuesday Q

Can you get a rash from washing your hands a whole lot?  I've been washing them more lately since being constantly sick.

I noticed a rash starting on my left thumb early last week, and now I have more of it on my left and right hand.  It looks like tiny clusters of whelps or tight blisters (like poison ivy sorta, but not) on the backs of my hands.

Sometimes it itches like crazy, sometimes I don't feel it at all.

Could it be a funky pregnancy symptom?  I guess I'll ask my doc about it tomorrow.

Edited to make hand plural.  I wash both of them.

  • Could it be from the soap?

  • YES! I once over anti-bac'd my  hands and killed all the good bacteria.  I had nasty peely hands for weeks.

  • I wash my hands and use sanitizer like crazy, I have a touch of OCD when it comes to that plus working in a hospital...

I also have very sensitive skin and sometimes my hands get dry and itchy from washing them so much. They was probably a little irritation and if you scratched it it would get worse.

Try using lotion every few times you wash your hands to help keep them moisturized as well as clean

A co-worker told me that just rubbing my hands together with warm water would get the trick done and that I should try it for a while and see if it clears up.

It's the weirdest thing because I've never reacted to anything like this before.

  • Yes you can. My mom gets this too, she thinks it is eczema. I've had eczema my whole my life, so I am pretty much use to it.Pregnancy can actually aggravate eczema.

Several things you can do - use hydrocortisone where it is breaking out. Also using Eucerin Aquifor helps protect it. Get a strong hand moisturizer (neutrogena makes a great one).

I just use a moisturizing hand soap now at home, and I don't use antibac soap much at all.  At work, I brought my own soap in.

  • I get that every so often - tiny blisters that then dry up and make my hands peely.  It's a type of eczema.  I would try using some hydrocortisone or something on them overnight (maybe even use it with the moisturizing gloves).
  • Thanks everybody!

  • It's from overwashing and drying up your natural oils. It happened to me before when they changed the soap at work to a stronger antibacterial.  I'm in a hospital, so I'm constantly washing and using purell.  I keep Aquaphor in my pocket now and use it every couple of washes and it cleared it right up.
