We had planned to get Keira a big girl bed this month. We've talked about it for months and for the most part we get "no, I want my crib". Once in a while she'll seem to like the idea of a big girl bed but for the most part she seems to want to keep her crib.
Yesterday I mentioned it again and again I got "no, I want my crib". She just turned 3 this month. Should we hold off for a little while? Is she telling us that she is just not ready to give up the crib or does she just not really get what a big girl bed is?
I'm not in a hurry to put her in a bed but she's 3. I kind of think it's time but I don't want to push it and then have it be a nightmare.
Re: Should we get her a big girl bed?
I had literally the same situation as you with my DS. I would ask about the big bed and he would always say no that he wanted the crib. Well my DH and I decided it was time to switch so we did it last Friday. He was literally telling me that he still wanted the crib as we were driving home to set up the new bed. I was worried but things have been going great! He has not climbed out once. He loves to play on the bed during the day. He calls for us in the morning when he wakes up.
I think that they just don't understand the concept of a real bed. Oh and he is 35 months so very similar in age to your DD
Does her crib convert to a toddler/day bed? We have DD1 and DS1's cribs as toddler beds now, and they both do great. We'll get DS1 a new big bed probably in the fall....when he's 4.5. Maybe if you can just convert her crib for a while, she still has the crib, but more of a big girl style.
Also, have you taken her to look at beds/bedding? Maybe make a big deal out of that...that she can pick out new bedding/pillows/rug etc.
DS turned 3 in December, and is still perfectly happy in his crib. Maybe when we move we can revisit the idea.
We had a discussion about this last week-- the Bump is the only place that seems to rush the big kid beds. Most of my friends and family made the transition somewhere between 3 and 4, depending on the kid's personality.
DS - December 2006
DD - December 2008
We haven't taken her to look for beds but we have looked at bedding a little and she does get excited. She seems to really like the owl bedding at Target (forget what the name is). We don't have space in her room for both.
Maybe we'll just see how the next few months go. Thanks everyone, glad to hear about your stories as well.
