Is this ridiculous?? (toddler bed)

In the summer, we bought DS a full size bed (new mattress, new headboard) and we decorated a whole new room for him. It's been hell since then, and he refuses to sleep in his bed for more than a couple hours at a time, and he has been in our bed from about midnight on every single night since about August. He always has a different excuse...ranging from "dark in there, too bright in there, my socks don't match," you name it. It is a rather big bed, one that he'll probably have forever.  Last night he wouldn't go in his bed and he said "no like this bed, it's too big." He started talking about his friends race car bed, which really is way more his size.

Here's my question: I found a toddler bed with bedding on Craigslist, it was $90 or best offer, so I offered $50 just to see what she says. Am I ridiculous to even consider getting this other bed....I don't want him to think- hey I didn't do what I was supposed to and I said I wanted a car bed and voila-there it is! Or am I not ridiculous for thinking that for $50, he might sleep again?

  • hmm tough call, but since it has been a while, not just a week or 2, I think I wold get the bed for some peace of mind.  do you have rails on his bed? we did that for dd when we switched her from the crib and the rail is so high it is almost crib like to her.. I think she still feels secure in there with the rail
  • My son started off in a car bed-he loves it, but now we're thinking of moving him to a twin/full size bed by his 3rd bday.

  • Loading the player...
  • We did have a rail on there, but he freaked the hell out, and it was actually better when we took it off. He will now at least go to sleep there, even if it's just for a couple hours.  I'm so torn, I hate for him to think he's getting what he wants, but we are so desperate at this point I'm willing to try it. But I don't want him to think he wins (which he will, lol.)

I'm not buying a new twin mattress, since we just forked over good money for his brand new full mattress and headboard, but this takes a crib mattress, and we put an eggshell mattress on it so it's comfy.  I give up.

  • For $50, it's worth the try.  It won't be a big loss if it ends up not being the "big" bed.
  • I would spend the $50 on a toddler bed because at this point I would probably try anything to get some sleep.

  • For $50, I'd give it a try.   I would probably spin it as a 'good behavior' present - give him a few days to be on his best behavior for a BIG surprise present.  That way it's something you are doing for him, not something he is forcing you to do.  GL!

  • I'd go for it!  I'd want some sleep.
  • I 100% think you should do it.  All of you getting some good rest and him learning to sleep in his own bed in his own room (assuming that's what YOU want) is important.  I bet in a year or so he'll be ready for his big bed back.  And I don't think that by giving him exactly what he asks for in this case is a bad thing.  It's not like you give him whatever he wants with everything else.

Good luck!  I hope he does well!

  • DD thinks her twin bed is too big - she has to sleep with one of those body pillows and a zillion stuffed animals.  She likes to feel safe and secure and likes to snuggle - otherwise she ends up in our bed.  Have you tried any of that?

At this point, I'd fork over the $50 though.  Grab it while you can, re-sell it later.

  • With DS, I moved him to a twin bed after attempting a toddler bed.  He hated the toddler bed and wanted the big bed.  But the difference was, I had both beds in his room for him to choose from.  He was excited that he had 2 beds but eventually was sleeping in his twin bed full time.

that is exactly what we have. DS loved it at first because it's "fun."

I'd try it, worst case scenario he doesn't sleep in it then you just put it on CL again and get your money back out of it. And I don't think he'll see it as "I got what I want" kinda thing, he'll just be excited to have a cool bed.
