I thought the Chinese pair who went first tonight were fantastic, and it made the others I watched seem disappointing. I stopped watching after 4 pairs.
Unlike other years I don't think that there is any skater(s) that have really connected with the public or offered a great story line so it is difficult to get interested in them. But, the short program is rarely the better of the two as it is very specific as to what is required for points to qualify. The judging system doesn't really help because it doesn't motivate people to do anything new or different. The men's should be the best!
I used to compete in figure skating and I barely recognize the sport I used to love. Every program looks the same because of the way they changed the scoring. Points are awarded for certain things (like catch leg in a layback spin) so every woman does it now. Extra points were given when the lady held her leg while going into the death spiral in the pairs and for changing hands in the death spiral so every couple did it. It's great for scoring in the sense that you just add 2 + 2 but it's back because it doesn't reward creativity. The problem is that if they went back to the old system of judging, it would increase creativity but the judging was so unfair. There are still problems with the judging but it seems a little better than under the old system.
