Diaper Rash Ointment

Cooper has a diaper rash that is getting progressively worse. We have some cream from the NICU that seems to help, but we are almost out. I can't find it, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what it is the same as? It is called Critic-Aid Clear, and the active ingredient is 71.5% Petrolatum. It is a white almost grainy paste.

Any other suggestions would be great. We have been trying to let him air out all afternoon, and he seems happier, but I feel so bad for him. He has been sleeping 8 hours straight, so I think sitting in the diaper overnight is the problem...

Re: Diaper Rash Ointment

  • No idea about the NICU diaper cream. Could you call them and ask?

A couple of other suggestions: Try taking the blow-dryer to his behind (on cool air) to get it really, really dry. Also, we use a mixture of A&D ointment and regular diaper cream.

Lastly, maybe try an overnight diaper if you feel the regular one is getting too wet. I don't know if they make them that small, but it might even be worth going up a size so you can use overnight ones.

    HTH. Diaper rashes suck.

We do a blow-dry every night--hair, body, etc.  She loves it.

We use Desitin, and Lily actually has her first bit of diaper rash today.  You can also use vaseline as well!

We are also in a diaper that it technically "too big."  It seems to help as well.

  • we used a concoction of barrier paste (listed below.. it was grainy- it might be similar to what your nicu used.) and powder and zinc.

it ALWAYS worked! when they started trying to fortify my bm it got TERRIBLE. this mixture worked great. now, it doesn't really ever get that bad, but i use burt's bees ointment and it works fine to get rid of it.

  • I don't know about the ointment. Robbie's had a couple of really bad ones from antibiotics for his ears.

The first one, I tried everything and finally A&D ointment saved the day.
The 2nd one I tried the A&D with no luck and it was aquaphor that finally seemed to help.

To soothe it and keep it from getting worse, you can try making a paste of 50/50 mylanta & aquaphor. The mylanta soothes the burn, the aquaphor protects. Let that dry, then add your usual diaper cream (I like butt paste since it has the most zinc oxide) let that dry, then add powder. The goal is to get a really thick paste. Then when you're changing, don't aim to wipe it all off. Just wipe for the poop.. and then add another layer of the above.

Also try frequent sitz baths, drying thoroughly between.

Poor little guy. I never really realized how awful diaper rash was until Robbie got his first real one.. it was horrible.

  • DD had one in the NICU that was bad enough that it bled. We tried a custom paste from the pharmacy, butt paste A & D, and all the others, finally we jus had to strip her naked and leave her butt up under the heat lamp.  only thing that worked. now we rarely have a problem, but butt paste usually does the trick.

  • I swear by Triple Paste, DD has such sensitive skin and this stuff is amazing!  It clears EVERYTHING up in a day.

  • Go to your local pharmacy counter and ask the pharmacist for a tube of Calmoseptine. They use it in the hospital and it's wonderful for little butts. You don't need a RX and it runs about $6-7....

  • We put a squirt of destinin original (purple tube) on with almost every diaper change.  We haven't had a diaper rash yet.

  • Try mixing a&d with desatin.

If its really bad, put some flour or corn starch in frying pan and cook it.  Use a cast iron skillet if you have one.  Let it cool and put it on his bum.  I know it sounds weird, but it works.  I learned this trick from one of my patients.  She raised 11 kids and she used it on all of them!
