registry -- pros and cons

I am trying to decide whether or not to register.  My mom is sort of opposed (argue with her...not with me) to registeries to begin with. She doesn't think I should because since it's my first child and I'm the first of my friends to have a child, I won't be getting many hand me downs...so I need everything.  Her view is that it's not really like a wedding where personal taste comes into play as much...by and large bottles are bottles...right?

So, what do you think -- pros and cons?

Re: registry -- pros and cons

  • I think it is good to have one. If you are the first of everyone then even better to have one so the know what you want/need.

  • 1. Just like wedding registeries, people like to have an idea of what you like and need.  There are a zillion baby products on the market, and people like to know that they are buying you something that you will use and enjoy.

    2. You don't need your mom's permission to register.  IF it is something you want to do, don't worry about her opinion.  If she doesn't like the idea, she doesn't have to buy you anything off of it.

I guess my problem is that I don't really know what I need.  And my mom's advice on what I need is probably a bit out dated....

When you go to register, they give you list...start from there.  Also, you can google baby registry lists and you will find a ton of info on what to register for.

They have check lists on most of the websites with baby registry. Just look on there. I am registering, but not for very much, I figure I'll get what I get at my shower.

haha yes, I am pretty clear on the fact that I don't need my mom's permission to register.  Since I'm getting most of my baby advice from her though....I figured I'd ask you ladies what you thought.

  • I think it is a good idea to have one - I know I prefer to get someone something that they want and I know they will use.  I guess to an extent a bottle is a bottle but at the same time if there is one you would prefer (as the mom to be) I would want to get that for you!
  • Since it is your first you are gonna need a few things and it would be nice to have what you want since you are the one using them. Plus there are some pretty hideous items out there! LOL

This exactly.  What if people get you all this random stuff that you don't want or won't use and then you are stuck buying all the stuff that you want.  I think it's rude to want people to buy you things but not register.

  • I think it would be extremely helpful to both you & your guests to have one. ?Specially because you're aren't getting hand me downs. ?This way you can put the things you need most on there & people can chip in and get you those bigger items. ?Plus this is YOUR baby, you should be the one picking out what you want for your baby (would you rather have glass bottles than plastic? ?Color preferences? etc.) ?If you don't register no one is going to know what you need or what other people are getting you and you'll just end up with way to many clothes, stuffed animals & cheap bottles instead of the big ticket items that you need. ?

Research it!  Ask friends w/ babies what they used vs what they didn't use.  Read reviews.  We got a month long subscription to consumerreports.com for $5 to make sure the choices we were making were safe.

Also, if you don't register you will surely get lots of duplicate items and that is always kind of awkward when you are opening gifts.

  • Also- if I was going to a baby shower a few years ago before I had even thought about babies I would have NO IDEA what to buy. I think it would be helpful for your friends who don't have kids yet because they might feel the same way. They probably will not know what you need most.
  • And to answer your specific question- I can't think of any cons to registering other than that it can be a little time consuming.
  • The good thing about a registry is you pick what you want so people buy you what you feel you need or what you like.  I think it can be personal.
Live your life to the fullest, Laugh at the things that don't matter, Love with all you've got and more.
  • I can't think of any cons about registering. I suppose if you don't register, everyone will just end up buying clothes for your LO (that's what I would do if there was no registry to go off of).
