gagging on oatmeal?

Anyone experience this? I ground up some in the blender and its super fine. I added water to it and it looked and tasted normal to me. Once she started coughing on it I added some fruit and it was a bit better but not much. I think i'll try milk instead of water next time. Do you think that was the issue or do babies get that reaction more with oatmeal in general? She kept opening her mouth for more but coughed like every time!

Re: gagging on oatmeal?

  • It's most likely the texture.  Try milk and make it super thin the first few times then work your way up.  You can try adding purees to it too to give it some flavor.

  • I agree with pp. For DS it was all the texture. If the texture was wrong in any food I gave him he'd gag and gag. I just made it a lot thinner and added some banana and he took it fine.

  • I will third on the texture. My DD gagged to the point of vomiting on lumpy oatmeal. Once we added more fruit to it, she was fine.

  • I agree about the texture, I'd try to grind it more, and use breastmilk or formula, whichever you use.

I'm not sure if you have a specific reason you're choosing to make your own oatmeal, but if you can't get it fine enough, I would go buy an organic baby oatmeal.  I use Earth's Best, and a box is only about $3, and lasts a long time.  DS has been eating it for about a month now, and we've never had a problem with gagging with it.

  • My DD did the same for the first few weeks. We watered it down until she got used to it and slowly increased the texture. She still only really likes purees.
