I wouldn't get a Moby then if you want one product to last that long. Mobys are rated to 35lb, but all I ever hear is how stretchy they get and how LO doesn't seem as snug and secure by around 17lb. DD is 13lb, and already starting to sag. I do love how cozy the Moby is though, and for newborns, honestly think there isn't a better carrier out there. If you want a wrap that will last through toddlerhood, you'll want to look into a woven wrap. Most people who wrap with wovens though, started with a Moby- it's easier to learn with and is more forgiving of mistakes. I'm still working out the kinks on wrapping with a woven. But, it is very sturdy and depending on the wrap you get, will last well through toddlerhood (think 45lbs).
The other options available for newborns are soft structured carriers like the Beco, Ergo or Pikkolo, or a mei tai style carrier like a Baby Hawk. There are special ways to hold newborns in each of these though- the Ergo, for instance, requires purchase of a seperate "newborn insert" to ensure LO fits properly in it while they're small. Some people have said they just used rolled up receiving blankets and that served the same purpose. I'd suggest going to You Tube and watching videos of how to put on and use each of the carriers- that should give you a feel as to what would work for your needs.
Feel free to ask me any questions that come up while you're hunting. I have a bit of a carrier fetish, and have done a lot of research!
I loved the moby wrap. Liam was really colicky, and he really liked being confined and snuggled in close.... however, the fabric is stretchy, and he pulls it down too much now. We haven't used it in months (and months). I may look into an ergo or something of that nature, that can be used for longer. I don't know if my DS would have liked it as much since I think the babies are a little freer, but I wish I had something now that is a back carrier. We have a mai tei (sp) but it's hard to put on with a wiggly baby when you're by yourself. If you can afford the moby and if space is not an issue, it is a very nice wrap for newborns.

I don't know about any other wraps (I've only had experience with the Moby and the Bjorn, which I don't like) but Logan is still in his Moby wrap (as of 10 mins ago actually!) and he is 5 months and almost 18 lbs!
Like pp - most stop using the Moby around 15 to 20 pounds. You can probably find a cheap used one on Craigslist or SwapSpot, though. Tonya_G and I both hang out on the AP board... So we can help with specific carrier questions. Or post over there - very friendly group of mommies!

try to find one at a consignment shop. We got one from a friend. I used it a handful of times. Addy did not like it, even though I did. I have much better luck with the ergo baby.
