Preemies

Question for those who give fortified BM.

How long did you/will you continue to do so?  DD has more than caught up on weight/height charts, but our ped recommends fortifying any BM bottles she gets until 1 year.  I trust her, and she's very pro-BFing, but I was just curious who else has received the same advice.

Re: Question for those who give fortified BM.

  • We did.

Even if they are caught up, they can still be vulnerable and need the extra cals.  We were told to stick with it until a year.

  • it doesn't really apply to me- because we haven't done it since prolacta in the nicu...

but they said she could be off of it now if i had been doing it.. she's 8mo, 5mo adjusted. they said at 6mo they need the nutrients from food (which i don't necessarily agree with either.) but that if i'm feeding her baby food etc. she'll get what she needs. (in addition to the bm)

  • my pediatrician said to expect to be on it for at least 6-9 months.
  • We weren't really given a time, just told for quite a while. When he went for his well visit at 7 months, he told us keep giving him the extra calories, so I expect we'll also be doing it for a year. I do breastfeed one session a day, the first feeding of the day and our pedi is great with that. Ocassionally I will even nurse one time in the evening as well, but not on a regular basis. The pedi is ok with that as well.
  • I asked at DD's 6-month appt and her ped said we could stop.  I think at one of our early visits they said 6-9 months.

  • We were told we could stop at 4 months. He was gaining weight and his bloodwork was fine. We do however still have to give him an iron supplement. Now I normally just mix it with his bottle or food.
  • my doctor just wanted to see steady weight gain, she didn't care how it happened. He had a TON of trouble with formulas, so he was on straight breastmilk for the first few months he was home and gaining well- she didn't care.

Then he stopped eating and we had to fortify to make the most of what he would eat.
