I have no idea... I've heard actual burp cloths, cloth diapers, receiving blankets, hand towels... and on and on. What do you prefer and how many do you use or feel the need to have? Thanks!
I bought a pack of Gerber cloth diapers. They were fairly cheap and you got a lot, so once they are like crazy yucky I won't feel bad about tossing them. We've only used about 4... and we keep washing them. But I do her laundry probably every 3 days in order to keep up with that and other various dirty items!

For planned burping we use burp cloths (that look like cloth diapers but cute colors). Honestly you dont know how much your LO will spit up until he/she arrives. We bought 12 and its working well for us. We do laundry about every other day. We also put a bib on her for each feeding as she frequently spits up. As for using receiving blankets and hand towels... we do that too when things arent expected to come up.
I used clothe diapers they sell at BRU and now I am using receiving blankets that DS grew out of for swaddling. I have a ton and it is worth it since he spits up a lot.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

We use the Gerber flannel burp clothes. The terry cloth ones the stores sell suck. We also have some clothe diapers that someone sewed some ribbon on to make cute burp cloths and those work well too.

We bought some off-white inexpensive washcloths from BBB. There were 12 in the pack. I like these better than burp cloths because they are smaller and cheaper. We just fold them in half and then when he spits up re-fold it the other way. They also tuck nicely under the chin.
The "fancy" burp cloths we got as gifts I use when we go out of the house so he doen't look like he is sportin' a stinky ol rag.
I got several different kinds of burp cloths at my shower but they are all actual burp cloths. Some are big, small, thick, thin, and really they all work great. I like they bigger sized ones because he moves around when I try and burp him and the skinny ones are easy for him to miss if he happens to spit up.

I think I use the sucky Gerber ones. I didn't know there was another type! This makes so much sense. I thought everyone used cloth diapers as burp cloths around the house, so I got two packs but have only opened one. I do use them since that's what we have, but they are yuck!
We have about 6 burp clothes we took home from the hospital, they're not nice looking but they do the trick. We just keep one nearby, LO doesn't really spit up that much/often.
I am super lucky. My mom made me some multi-purpose pads in various sizes that are flannel on one side and really soft terry on the other. I use them for everything! I put one on the changing pad, one under DD when she sits on the couch in her Boppy (in case of a blowout), one for a burp cloth, one on my Boppy when I feed her to catch any leaks, etc. I have about a dozen or so.

Cloth diapers.
Those cutesy burp cloths do *nothing* but momentarily catch the mess. The cloth diapers actually soak it up. I use about 6 or 7 a day.
Uh, burp cloths.
