Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Does your baby scratch their head?

When my DD (4 months) gets tired or frustrated, she scratches her head.  Not so much her face, but the sides of her head.  It is driving me nuts!!!!

She looks awful, it is all scratched up and scaly.  I have tried everything from hats to mittens.  She sucks on the mittens and then scrubs her head with them and I think it is making her skin more chapped.  The hats don't seem to stay on well and I can't really leave them on at nap time.

It is just really frustrating to watch her do this to herself, and I hate seeing her head all scratched up, scabby, scaly, red :(

Can anyone else commiserate, or does anyone have other suggestions?

  • Mine scratches the top of her head like a monkey. She has a nice little scab on the back of her head where she scratched it open.

  • Mine just started this scratching the head thing. And in the mornings, he grabs chunks of hair and pulls it out. He had little blood dots either side of his head where he yanked it out by the roots.  Makes me sad.
  • Yes Jack scrathches the left side and his ear. As soon as the scratch marks start to fade he does it again. He also has a real dry scaly spot on that side that I try to keep lotioned up. But last weekend my mom was here and put that thick nutrigena hand cream on it and it was bettere in just an hour. I can't seem to stop the scratches but at least that can treat the aftermath :)
  • Lincoln is TERRIBLE about scratching. I cut his nails nearly every night, but it doesn't make a difference. Plus, he has pretty dry skin so it's always raw once he's done scratching away.

I'm definitely thinking there's just no way around it.

  • Yes, she scratches the side of her head like crazy!  She has little scratch marks all over the sides of her head and most of the hair has fallen out on the sides.  I wish I could find a way to stop her.  She does it a lot when she's tired.  We got this tiny blanket with a stuffed animal head on it, I never knew the point of it, but I've started to give that to her when she gets tired and she scratches/feels that (it's super soft) instead.  It's far from a perfect solution, but has helped some.
  • he more like rubs his head. i don't think he could get through all his hair to scratch himself. seriously, he needs an infant haircut!
  • Same problem here. I put a little vasiline on her head each morning to help the dryness and give a bit of a protective cover, and otherwise try to keep gloves on when she's sleepy.

  • Yep, same problem here...only he scratches the area right between his eyebrows. I try to keep his nails as short as possible (even cut a little too short yesterday and made him cry Embarrassed), but he still manages.

It sucks because every picture we have of him he has a whole bunch of little red marks between his eyebrows! I've thought about putting gloves on him, but he sucks his hands to soothe himself and I think he might be teething, so that's out too!

  • she scratches the dry part behind her ear.. I put a little a&d on it and that seems to help
