Pack and Play as a bassinet?

I have read online and in baby bargains that the Graco pack n play can be used as a bassinet if you want the baby to sleep in your room for awhile before putting them into the crib.  Has anyone done this or plan to do this?  I really don't want to have to buy a separate bassinet and everything that goes along with it.  I am hoping this is safe for baby.  Thanks!

Re: Pack and Play as a bassinet?

  • I was planning on doing this, but my friend has offered me her bassinet to use, so I'm just going to go with that. I think the pack n play should work fine.

  • That is what we are doing.  We have the Elyse Pack N Play by Graco and it has a newborn napper station (looks like a Moses Basket) and a Bassinet feature- basically the mattress for the Pack N Play is suspended higer and then when the baby gets bigger, you drop it down lower to use it as an actual Pack n Play.  I have heard a LOT of people use these rather than bassinets and they seem safe!
  • we are going to use a pack and play in our room for the first few months -- they have some that have bassinets built in to them - it really shouldnt be much different than if they started out in a crib -- which is completely fine, so you should be good. consumer reports say that graco and chicco are the 2 best brands.

  • Absolutely! It's like getting two things in one =) We kept the pack n play in our room with the bassinet and it worked out perfectly. Once he was old enough we just took the bassinet insert out and use the pack n play for him when we can't keep an eye on him (ex: getting ready in the morning, cleaning, etc) Worked out great!
  • That's our plan too.  Friends of ours did this and their dd was fine.

  • Yep ... that's what we're doing ...
  • I'm planning on it.  Most Graco Pack N Plays have a bassinet feature.  I will be buying Pack N Play sheets to make it a bit more comfortable.

  • That is our plan. ?But, has anyone read any safety ratings for the newborn napper part? I just curious because they tell you to get a Firm mattress and the napper is not firm. ?I just wondering if I need to consider that or not.?

    WDYT??

  • i also am doing this. the first time i got a bassinet and never had a pack n play. and now i wondering what i was thinking. we do a lot of traveling so not only will i be using it for the first couple of months instead of a bassinet i will also be using it when we travel.
  • we used our PNP with bassinet attachment as his main sleep space until he outgrew it. Then we tried his crib but he hated it and he ended up just in the PNP in our room....

  • This is the plan for us too.

  • Yep, we did it with DD so she could stay in our room for the first few months, and we plan to do with with DS too. It's so convenient. Plus, you need a pack and play for when they're older anyway, so this just gives you even more mileage. :)
  • We're going to use the PnP for the first couple of weeks and then transfer LO to his/her crib.

This is the PnP we went with:

This was my concern as well. It is nowhere near as firm as a crib mattress, so I can't decide whether to use overnight for new baby. I didn't with DS.

  • That's what we are doing, it's nice because it also has a changing table and you can wheel it around to where you are...I wheel it in front of the bathroom door when I'm getting ready
  • I did this for every night the first 3 months.  She still goes in it some nights.  My tip - forget about a newborn napper.  We purchased one with it and didn't use it once because it didn't seem safe.  I'd get one with a mobile on it and a changing table.  Just my opinion.
