BLW Check-In

Alright ladies, what have you and your little foodies (or inmates running the insane asylum as referred on 6-12) been up to this week?

1.  Has your child developed a new food they love?

2.  Has your LO gained a new feeding skill?  Pincer grasp?  Fist mash? etc?

3.  What response have others had (if any) to your BLW?  Support?  Fear? Negativity? Awe?

4.  PIP if you have a fun one!

Re: BLW Check-In

  • 1 - I have another noodle monster on my hands.  Last night DS had a few bites of chicken and a few peas, but he went crazy for the linguine in tomato sauce.  He has clearly learned the sign for "more" at daycare because each time I signed it and put more noodles on his plate he got a huge grin and plunged his hand into the linguine.  Adorable!

2 - I think he's just better in general at managing smaller pieces, but he still prefers bigger things with handles or dry things like cereal & chicken to pick up.

3 - The last week or two daycare has commented on how well he's eating. With the snow, no one else has really seen him in the last week.  I think my parents and ILs are going to find it adorable when they see him in action this weekend - although my MIL will probably have some interesting comment about him eating regular food.  Or maybe she'll just be sad that I won't let him try cake yet at DD's birthday party.  Mean old mom!  :-)

  • 1.  M LOVES steak.  We had it for dinner one night and then leftovers for lunch.  He spent his whole meal with the steak slice in his mouth.  In fact, he managed to tear off a piece and proceeded to chew on it for 20 mins.  I was shocked!

    2.  Has your LO gained a new feeding skill?  Pincer grasp?  Fist mash? etc?  We've had a few bean dishes this week and M's figuring out how to gather a bunch in his fist, then mash his fist near his face.  Otherwise he prefers sticks.

    3.  What response have others had (if any) to your BLW?  Support?  Fear? Negativity? Awe?

My grandmother who disapproves of many of my parenting decisions, thinks this is fabulous.  My mother has been skeptical from the beginning, but had breakfast w/us via Skype the other day and was quite impressed that he's actually "eating" things.  My aunt on the other hand is still trying to convince me to use a reclining high chair and spoon so he can't spit food back out. *sigh*

    4.  This has been one of my favorite pics this week.  I try not to take too many during dinner as the light on my camera is often distracting for little man.

  • 1.  Has your child developed a new food they love? He loves peaches which were new this week. He also liked his first tastes of toasted bagel.

    2.  Has your LO gained a new feeding skill?  Pincer grasp?  Fist mash? etc? He's learning to move the food in his hand to get it in his mouth. It really is amazing to see how good he is getting at feeding himself. He also discovered that he can sort through any food that falls into his bib pocket and eat that. That makes us laugh every time.

    3.  What response have others had (if any) to your BLW?  Support?  Fear? Negativity? Awe? In public people stare. My MIL freaks out every time and doesn't understand why we don't feed him pablum. She thinks he's going to choke.

    4.  PIP if you have a fun one!

    Peaches are good!

FYI, I plan on updating by blog today or tomorrow with how BLW is going for us and list all the foods DS has "eaten" if anyone is interested.

Is that a fresh peach?  I'm soooo jealous!  I gave M a piece of my canned peaches and he loved them.  I had canned them last summer and though I use a pretty light simple syrup, I'd prefer to give him the real, sugar-free stuff.

Yes, it is. Luckily we have a good selection of fresh fruits and veggies right now and the peaches were on sale. I tried a nectarine last night but I think he liked the peaches better.

  • 1) Charlotte loves everything we've tried, I don't know that she has a favorite but she's had diced fruit & veggies, puffs, cheerios, shredded crockpot chicken, beans (cannelini or black), yogurt is new for her this week and she loves the YoBaby Pear & Green Bean blend

    2) I've noticed her perfecting the pincer grasp just this week!

    3) N/A.  I never really discuss this sort of thing with anyone.  Purees have never been a regular part of her routine, but we did offer her a taste of some pureed stuff as early as 6 months and I'd give her a mum mum rice rusk everyday while we were eating dinner, so maybe some people just assumed we were doing the typical pureed baby food deal.  It's never really come up though.

Quinoa - both just the cooked grain & spaghetti noodles. Since we've had to give up wheat, this has been a great replacement for pasta noodles & couscous. I've also made him baby cereal that's a blend of GF oatmeal, quinoa, & amaranth.

    2.  Has your LO gained a new feeding skill?  Pincer grasp?  Fist mash? etc?

He's doing much better at picking up small pieces of food and clumps of rice, quinoa, etc.

    3.  What response have others had (if any) to your BLW?  Support?  Fear? Negativity? Awe?

We had the ILs over for dinner this weekend & they were amazed at DS eating bell pepper slices.

  • Hope it's okay I join in here although I just lurk and never post.  We just started BLW and it's so exciting to see my baby go.

    1.  Has your child developed a new food they love?

Jude went crazy for banana.  It was slipping and sliding all over the place, but he loved it.

    2.  Has your LO gained a new feeding skill?  Pincer grasp?  Fist mash? etc?

Since we just started, he's still grabbing with full fist.  Also, he doesn't tend to notice when the food has fallen back down on his tray.

    3.  What response have others had (if any) to your BLW?  Support?  Fear? Negativity? Awe?

My family seems supportive but I can't tell.  A friend made a sort of judgemental remark when we posted that he'd had his first food, an asparagus spear.  She said, "Asparagus spear?  Haven't you heard of pureed baby food?"

    4.  PIP if you have a fun one!

I've never done a PIP so hope this works....if not, I'll get it next time!  Here he is enjoying some bread from my breakfast sandwich.

Also, we bought the BLW book but have yet to read it through.  My knowledge currently only comes from reading a bunch of blogs.  Can you tell me when it is okay to give Jude meat and dairy products? Should we stay away from anything since he's only 6 months old or is everything okay besides the obvious (honey, nuts...)?  Thanks for any advice!

  • I am taking feeding solids very slow because 1) DD isn't super duper insistantly excited about them, and 2) I'm a little lazy.  That being said, she is getting better and better at eating foods and I am becoming less scared that she will choke.

She seems to like every food that we've given her.  She went to town on the grilled cheese sandwich that she had.  I one side in tomato soup, and she liked that, too.

She mostly just sucks on the food, but was able to bite some chunks of banana, yesterday.  She has also gotten better at picking up her food and getting it to her mouth.  She seems to have made the connection that when she is in her highchair, she is supposed to stick the stuff I give her in her mouth.

As far as support is concerned, my mom keeps trying to feed DD and is very concerned about the things I give her, but I think it is more of a paradigm (sp?) shift than criticism.  She just isn't used to the idea of giving babies real food.  She loves watching DD eat, though.

Welcome and glad you posted!  Regarding meat/dairy it's definitely a personal preference.  We've done everything except the obvious choking hazards pretty much since 6 months, but we have no family history of allergies etc. Any milk that's part of a dish we've done.   He's also had dishes that were made with eggs (pancakes specifically) but we haven't given him eggs solo.
