Are there any really good pregnancy books out there?

Re: Pregnancy Books

  • I bought one at the doctor's office that was kind of generic, but my sister-in-law bought me The Mayo Clinic's Guide to Pregnancy.  I really like it because in the back it has a reference section where you can look up symptoms to see if they are normal or when they occur.  It is broken up in sections (I think once every four weeks is a new chapter) that describe what is happening with you and the baby developmentally.  One last thing I like is that it has a whole chapter on labor, c-sections, and taking the baby home.

One other book I'm reading (not about pregnancy, but about baby stuff) is Baby Bargains.  This book has suggestions about the best brands to buy and costs for all of your baby furniture, equipment, etc. It really puts it in perspective.Surprise

  • I read Your Pregnancy Week by Week.  It broke everything down weekly (obviously lol) with fetal development, how mom was changing/feeling, etc.  I liked it a lot.  I'd heard that What to Expect When Your Expecting could be a bit alarmist, so I stayed away from that one even though it's so popular.

Ditto on Baby Bargains, even though it's not a pregnancy book.  It's full of useful info and recommendations on baby gear and such.

  • I agree that What to Expect is a little alarming. It tells you everything they test for and what the detriment it can be to your baby even if only like .0001% of babies get it.  I really like "from the hips". It's information and entertaining.
  • I have to agree with pp's...I really like the Mayo Guide for the section on symptoms and the development of the baby.  I am looking forward to reading the other sections as I get farther along.  Baby Bargains is great!  It really opens your eyes as to what is necessary versus what you "think" you need.  Your Pregnancy Week by Week is okay...but I find that websites like this one and babycenter.com, I can find the same info.  Good luck in your search for what you need.

  • My dr's office actually gave me the Mayo guide.  I borrowed Week by Week from a friend and bought What to Expect .  I found What to Expect not only alarmist, but condescending, too, and didn't read much of it.   I liked the Mayo Guide and Week by Week.  I also read Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy (no mention of vaccines) and The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy, which I found both informative and funny.  Those two were the only two I actually read completely....
