Nurseries and Baby Gear

Baseboard heaters

Hi everyone,

Looking for some opinions here.  My husband and I are expecting our first baby (a boy!) in May and we're in the process of arranging the nursery. It's a 12x12 room which is pretty much perfectly square. The problem that we're running into is that we have baseboard heaters and there is one along the back wall.  Does anyone have experience with baseboard heaters and crib placement?  Should we avoid putting the crib on that wall?  My husband prefers the setup with the crib on that wall but I'm a bit nervous about it.  Thoughts??  Thanks!

Re: Baseboard heaters

  • Depends on what kind of heat you have - we have baseboard radiators which basically heat water in the pipes and radiate heat that way. They don't get hot enough to cause a fire if something was up against them. If you have electric baseboards (my parents have these) I wouldn't put anything up against them as they get very hot.

  • They are hot-water baseboards not electric. I'm just getting nervous between that and having a bumper in the crib (but it's so cute!) I'm sure everything will be fine - just first time parents and have some unanswered questions.

    Thanks!

  • I wouldn't put the crib on that wall if it's going to be directly over/in front of it.  Our vents in the master bedroom are behind our bed and we get so dry from the heat being on at night.  Now, I turn it down.  Also, it might be too drafty once you switch to a/c in the summer.  I just think if I'm uncomfortable with it, a baby will be more so.  Luckily, in the baby's room, the vent is on the wall underneath the window so we won't be using that wall for the crib.

Hot-water baseboards are the least dry form of heat you can have for your house. If it's a problem you could use a humidifier, but we don't have an issue in our home with dryness. You're fine as far as heat in a not-going-to-cause-a-fire sense. Our cats literally sit against our baseboard heaters for the warmth - they don't get that hot.
