does anyone know...

if penicillin is absorbed in breast milk.  We recently learned that DD is allergic to penicillin.  DH has strep and I now have a horrible sore throat. Going to see my PCP in the morning.  If I have strep, can I take ammoxicillin while still breastfeeding?

I will google and ask the Dr. but thought I'd see if anyone here knew.

  • if you ingest it, traces will be in your milk.  Just tell the doc and they can give you a different antibiotic.
  • I believe it can be passed on through breastmilk.  usual 1st choice for strep is amoxicillin, but I believe I've seen keflex prescribed... it's a cephalosporin, but sometimes (I believe it's about 15%) people who are allergic to penicillin are also allergic to cephalosporins.

was dh swabbed for strep or just given an antibiotic?  make sure they swab you (if dh was not tested) and you get a positive result and tell them dc is allergic to penicillin.  what was her reaction ?

    good luck.

  • Thanks.

DH did have a positive strep test, so I'm pretty sure that's what it probably is.  So far DS seems fine.  DD is already on antibiotics for an ear infection so she should be okay.

DD had a horrible hive reaction to Augmentin.  So bad her eyes swelled shut and her hands and feet were swollen.  The on-call pedi sent us to the ER because they were concerned she would begin to have trouble breathing.
