MD/DC/NOVA ladies - weather related

Long before all this crazy weather hit, we had planned on visiting my inlaws this coming weekend (they live in Bethesda MD). I'm now thinking this is not a good idea - DH thinks everything will be fine by this weekend (travel-wise). Is our local news blowing this out of proportion or are you ladies really paralyzed by this weather? And I hear you're supposed to get more today??

Your thoughts??

Re: MD/DC/NOVA ladies - weather related

  • I'm on the VA side (Alexandria), and our roads were still pretty bad yesterday- even the highways. So I can't imagine they'll be much better after the 10-20 inches they're predicting for today. If it were me, I would cancel.

  • we are about 30 mins from Bethesda ...the highways here are not thoroughly plowed at all yet.  I am hoping they just did a crap job because of the other storm coming.  I would hope by this weekend though the roads will clear.  We got 28 inches the other day and are supposed to get and additional 10-15 inches tonight/tomorrow.

    That's my thinking too! Thanks!

  • I think things will be fine by this weekend. All roads in our County (I live in the same county as your in-laws) will be plowed by midnight tonight (even now 90% of the roads are driveable). We're supposed to get more tonight, but this is an efficient place...its a safe assumption that all roads will be clear within 48 hours after this storm. We're travelling this weekend and I'm not worried at all.
  • The weather is really as bad as it sounds - yesterday I drove to BWI from the Eastern Shore and it was kind of miserable.  For some reason, they have only plowed half the lanes on the highway, or they've plowed the two outer lanes and not the middle lane (um, WTF?)... so yeah, the roads are a bit of a mess.  They're travel-able, but it will take you longer.

That said, I'd think that by Saturday it would be a doable trip.  If it were me, I'd still do it.

  • I'm in Philly and from what I've heard about that area is that alot of people in Baltimore are still without power.  I don't believe gov't employees have returned to work yet in DC.  At least where I am they are calling for another 18-24 inches of snow starting tonight and not ending until tomorrow at midnight.  Some schools have remained closed and are expected to be closed tomorrow and Thursday.  But, the highways should be fine by Friday at the latest.

If you can hold off until next weekend, I think that would be better.  What have your ILs said about the weather and how they're holding up?

  • I've been able to get out. The side roads are still pretty bad though.  We're supposed to get more tonight, so I'm thinking we'll be stuck inside again until Thurs., but this weekend should be fine to get out and about.  There's just no where else to put all this snow we're getting.

My ILs are complaining about the snow, but expect that we'll still come. They have power, but have not been out of the house since all this mess started - so they really don't have a great perspective on things!

That's exactly how it was here... you could do it, but it wasn't fun. Seriously, it stopped snowing Saturday night- why aren't the HIGHWAYS plowed by Monday?? :(  I hate winter.

Being from NY, we dig out pretty quick - but I hear that the Mid-Atlantic is having a tough time dealing with this.

Yeah, the DC area is usually crazy with even just an inch or two (schools close, there's no toilet paper or bread to be found on grocery store shelves, traffic gets even more terrible than it usually is)- so nobody knows what to do with all of this mess....

Yeah, I think it's south of the mason-dixon line that is having a rough time dealing.  It's not exactly normal weather... hell, it's not normal for Philly either, but we dig out pretty quickly unless it's really icy.

Yeah - plus everyone's snow removal budget is either gone, or very close to gone... so there are fewer plows out and less resources available.  It's just a big clusterfvck.

  • In VA and went almost to DC this am for my u/s and we almost got stuck a few times.  If you've got 4x or snow tires I think you'll be ok but right now it's terrible.  We're also getting another foot tonight.  They said we'd be plowed out by thurs from the last storm but who knows with this new storm.  My SIL who is in Waldorf (southern MD) said their roads were clear except for subdivisions.
  • DH's parents were talking about visiting this weekend and we told them to postpone a week- roads are still crappy (and full of people who don't know how to drive in slick conditions), and the non-assigned parking spots in our subdivision all have 6-ft piles of snow in them.  It's liveable, but I wouldn't come here if I didn't have to.

  • I'd wait and see what this next storm brings. If it fizzles, I think things will be fine by the weekend. If it drops another 2 feet we're going to be in trouble and I wouldn't come. There is just nowhere else for them to put the snow, and things are definitely still messy from last weekends storm (and it has now been 3 days since it stopped snowing).
