stool softner?

Hi ladies- first time on this board!  I had my baby on Friday in DC where we were in the middle of getting 2 feet of snow. Our ltitle snow baby is precious. We made it home yesterday.

A question for you girls- In the hospital I believe they were giving me colase as a stool softner. What else is approved for breastfeeding mammas? We are still having trouble getting out much with the snowy conditions and a 3 day old and more snow to come tomorrow, but the only stool softner I have at home is a generic kind of colase. The label says consult a healthcare provider before use while breastfeeding.

Anyone have any ideas? Or know of other products that are ok that I could send DH to the store for?

Thanks!

Re: stool softner?

  • The only thing I've been taking is colace. Mine is a generic version too.

  • After I had my LO my midwife said to drink smooth move tea before I go to bed. I did and it worked like a charm, I was really worried becuase I had bad tearing. It will get better.
  • I took Colace, when the pharmacy gave me the generic version I refused it and said I wanted the real stuff.  It still was painful to poo!  The first passing (5 days pp) I thought I was going to die, it felt like a baseball, I even took milk of magnesia to get things moving (approved by my Dr.) but still painful, It does get better...hang in there!!

  • docusate sodium is Colace. Generic is fine. I have taken it a couple of times.

All meds say check with a doc. Even Tyelonol and Tums. Which I find funny cause stuff you really should avoid do not always have this warning.

  • You should be fine with the generic colace. I called my clinic about this very question and she told me that any of the OTC stool softners/laxatives are fine for short term. If you are in doubt you could always call your OB. I'm sure they get this ? all the time.
