"Build-A-Library" Shower...weird?

I feel really fortunate in my life for so many reasons - one is that my mom's friends and some good friends of mine have both offered to throw separate showers.

It has also become a tradition at my school to host a shower when a colleague is having a baby...

I would love to have everyone get together for a brunch/lunch - and thought that asking for a "Build-A-Library" shower instead of a shower where people buy bigger things...

Does this sound weird? Normal? A good idea? A bad idea? Should I just have it be a luncheon and not bring gifts?

TIA

  • I think that's a great idea! I am having a book shower also and I can't wait to get all the children's books. It's fun to have the baby's library stocked and I love children's books.

  • I wouldn't mention the gifts at all, and if people ask if you are registered then tell them.  I would hate  it if someone told what kind of gift to buy.  Some people may go in on a gift for you, but I would leave it to the person in charge of hosting your shower to determine what kind of shower it should be.

  • I like the build a library Idea...you can do a lucheon because people are going to bring gifts even if you tell them not to... so you might as well feed them!
  • I think it's great!

  • For my "friends" shower that my friend had for me, she put on the invite that in lieu of a card, consider bringing a book to help start Jacob's library.  Of course she didn't make it sound like you had to buy a gift and a book because that can be expensive, but most of everyone brought a book as well as a gift.  I thought it was neat, and I didn't know she was doing it.

  • I think the bring a book thing would be really cute for your work shower (especially since it looks like you work at a school - they'd probably love that!).

  • for my shower w/ ds, we included a cute little rhyme that said instead of bringing a card, to sign a book for him instead.  we have a GREAT start to his library now. :)
  • I think its a great idea! On my DH's side of the family, instead of baby shower cards we always give out books with a little note included for the baby. If you don't need/want bigger items then I say go for it!

  • For my friend's shower, instead of a wishing well that you would have at a bridal shower, it was for baby books. I don't remember how they worded it on the invitation though.

  • I love this idea. I am a pre-school teacher and our class parent arranged one of this for my co-teachers last year. All the kids picked out their favorite books (in lieu of parents just donating money to a big gift.) The kids were so proud of their choices, and she now has a nice selection for her LO.

  • here is the poem...

A card is nice, it's sentiment is sweet,
But a book will keep baby on his feet.
For years to come, baby will read,
Longing for stories will never be a need.
A shelf full of wisdom from all who gave,
For baby to treasure and always to crave.
Filling the shelf should not be hard,

If you would please sign a book instead of a card.

This is what we are doing for my husband's side of family in April. Cards are so expensive these days anyways- I think its a great idea to do a book instead and they can write their message in the book.

  • I love the idea.  I am a huge reader so I hope my LO loves books as much as I do.

  • I've been to one of these and think it is a great idea for a work shower. Books can be as cheap as a few dollars, and doesn't make work people feel like that have to spend a bunch. People are going to bring a gift to a shower, and while I am not usually a fan of "dictating" what people should give as gifts, I think this is one of those times you could get a way with it. It just needs to be worded the right way.
  • I think it is a great idea. We do this at all the showers we go to now. I never buy cards anymore. I can find a book for just a dollar or so more than a card. I usually sign it inside as well.

My MIL is doing the same thing for our baby shower and that way instead of having a bunch of cards we are just going to toss most likely we will have books for the baby with an inscription in the front from each person who came.
