Thoughts on Maggie

My DH and I both love the name Maggie.  I realize this is traditionally a nickname of Margaret, which we don't love.

What are your thoughts on using Maggie as a full name?  Too informal? I am on the fence and can't decide.

  • I love the name Maggie! I don't necessarily think it needs the formal version as well.

  • I like Maggie a lot. Doesn't go with our last name, though. Some might say that it isn't a name she can grow into as an adult. However, I know three adult Maggies that seem to fit the name very well. Maybe it keeps them young?

Good luck! I'm finding that girl names are harder for us to agree on than boy names were.

  • I love the name Maggie!
  • its on our name list, not margaret or margie (dh grandmother name) but just MAGGIE

  • I think Maggie is lovely as a full name.  My full name is Mandie, which I think has a similar style/feel, and I've never felt shorted by not having a longer, more formal name.

  • I know someone that named their DD Maggie.  Just Maggie. Not short for Margaret.  I think it works fine as a full name.

  • I like Maggie, and it's not overused.

  • I like names that have a formal name and then a nickname, so to me Maggie is a nickname. It sounds good for a baby or child's name, but I like having a formal name that can be used as an adult or in more professional settings. I like Maggie though and we considered it as a nickname for Magdalene. We may still do this if we have another DD someday.

  • I love Maggie and am also not a fan of Margaret. I think it works as a full name. I know a Maggie actually (she is 20 now).

  • I don't think that Maggie has to be short for a more formal name.  I really like the name Maggie but not so much Margaret.
  • I'm not a big fan of Maggie, it's just too cutesy for me, but I've heard way worse. I don't like Margaret either, but what about other names that are close? Magdalena or Margot?

  • I knew a Maggie and that was her full name. I always wondered why her parents gave her a nickname. Personally, I think it's a bit cutesy for a full name.  I do think it's a very cute nickname.
  • I love it!

  • I like the name Maggie.

Unfortunately, I have 3 friends with dogs that are named Maggie, so it's not a possibility for us.

If you like it, go for it.

  • I love the name and I think it's fine on it's own. We named our dog Maggie long before we thought of children...

  • I know a little girl named Margaret after her great-grandma. She (age 5) definitely goes by Maggie. Actually, even when people need to use her mn, she is "Maggie MN". I have heard her parents call her Margaret maybe 2 times.

Anyway, I can totally see her as a Maggie as an adult. If Maggie is what you love, go for it!

  • maggie reminds me of a golden retriever [sorry, too many dogs have that name] but i also just don't like nicknames as formal names. i love margaret but maggie is nms.

i think if you want her to go by maggie, you need to remember that she might not want to so you should find a formal name to give her so she can choose what she goes by.

  • The name Maggie is very cute! I don't think there is anything that says your name should have a formal version of it. Do what you want!
