Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I need help with incessant crying.

What used to be the "witching hour" when Ian was a baby has turned into a full-on tantrum in the last few months.  He will sit for at least an hour every night and just wail - he doesn't want to eat, drink, be held, play, go outside, lay down, nothing.  Just scream.

So, now what?  Time-outs?  Is there a CIO for non-bedtime use?  I'm at a loss.  He spends 4hrs per day with me during the week and for more than an hour of it he's acting like he's pissed off at me.  I feel guilty considering punishment for this, but there is very clearly nothing wrong with him - he is just a miseryguts.

Yes.  Sometimes he'll take it and sometimes he'll throw it at me.

He's 15mos, and is in daycare from about 9am to 4:30pm.  DCP says he naps well, from about 11:30-2:30.

  • I don't know your view on tv but DD will calm down if I put Sprout on. She loves Caillou, Barney, Wonder Pets (Nick Jr), Sesame Street, Dora (Nick Jr.), and Dragon Tales. Also she loves listening to Free to Be, You and Me.

What time does he start screaming?  What time does he get up in the morning?  Is he teething?  Does he seem sick?  Is there a particular activity that "sets him off?"

I'm cool with TV but he's not always interested in it.  He used to really like Wonder Pets and YGG but lately he just kind of tunes it out.

The crying jag usually begins about 6pm.  He usually wakes up on his own around 8am.  We have had some teething lately but the teething and tantrum throwing don't seem to be related, IMO, since the tantrums are pretty regular and predictable.

I used to put him down for a catnap when he got home from daycare b/c he couldn't keep his eyes open, but at about 1yr he quit acting like he needed the nap.  And by that time he was trying to stay up later b/c of the late nap, so I just quit putting him down for it.  He seemed OK for a couple of weeks but maybe I need to start back up with the evening nap again.

  • He sounds over-tired.  Maybe move back his bedtime?

What are you/y'all usually doing when he gets in this mood?  What time does he go down for bed?  What time is dinner?  It seems that he might be getting tired/overtired.  Maybe try doing dinner and bedtime a little earlier to see if it helps.
