I'll also add that criminals don't rob from the poor like in Robin Hood. They usually go to the suburbs to do it.

You need to re-read Robin Hood, LOL!

ROFL.  I had to re-read MegGary's post.  I was like, wut?

    Exactly.

    wow.

Seriously guys the jist of Robin Hood is "rob from the rich, give to the poor"

He um, was robbing the rich.   LOLtastic!

LOL. I kind of ignored the Robin Hood reference. I am agreeing with the point that most people aren't going to break into a one bedroom, Cabrini Green adjacent apartment. They're going to drive to Naperville and rob someone there.

You know, I don't know about this.  I think there are statistics about proximity, etc.  If *I* was going to rob a house, I'd make sure I picked a richy rich looking one, but hey, that's me.

Same here.  I'm willing to bet there would be much more to gain from robbing a single family home in suburbia vs. a 1 bedroom apartment in the middle of Chicago.

We do have an alarm as a deterent. At night, both of our guns are in our respective night stands. We lock them in the safe in the morning. We have pretty elaborate game plans laid out in the event that someone were to break in. We were actually having a conversation last night about having "drills". I am well aware that we are super paranoid (it's more me), but God help anyone that breaks into our house.

I like the way you think Jessi...truly!!!

  • My view on guns has changed since we had DS.  We live in a smaller town; however, that doesn't mean that there are idiots out there that want to come in for a look to see what they can take.  We have an alarm system, but I don't see that doing much while we're home!  With that being said, DH has a hand gun that is locked up at all times.  It has several safety aspects to it, so that your hand has to be fully engaged before it can go off.  Not that we would keep it loaded and at DS's reach; however, there would be no way that DS could shoot it on accident...trust me.  We are responsible and know how to be safe.  Those that are worrying about guns and safety are those that don't own guns and nor should they!  Get off the soap box and move on!  If someone breaks into our house, he better know that we shoot to kill.  Find out the law in your state....it's legal to shoot intruders where we live.  He's dead...we're safe.  A*shole should have thought first!

That was my point. Naperville is a wealthy suburb of Chicago.

  • If you are wondering how prevalent home invasions are, ask your fellow bumpies. There are a couple I can think of who had this happen to them just recently!

  • Look, I'm a planner/bordering on Survivalist and I have home invasion plans, as well.

But my best and go to plans involve retreat with my kids.  There is a route direct route from my room to theirs-grab the baby, get to the kids' room and get out.

I'm not going to stay for some gunbattle over my NKOTB cd collection.  Not worth it.   IMHO in a home invasion, retreat is your best possible choice.  Of course not everyone's house is set up for that, and I do remember that lady in Oklahoma who shot the intruder, it's not always possible.

But leaving unlocked, loaded guns in a nightstand in case of an intruder is statistically invalid.   There is more a chance a child will find/use them than you'll need to fight off an intruder.   It's bad math.

Seriously. Without going in to detail, I live with a big fat target painted on me, my building, and my child. Our safety drills focus on safe rooms, reliable communication, and escape routes.

  • Well I don't have a choice, my H is a cop, and has several guns.  All of which are in the house but we don't have a safe yet.  (AND NO they are not in DS's reach nor are they loaded).  We will buy a safe soon though.

Are security system is his patrol car parked in our drive way.

Sorry, Kel, I just saw this. No, not directed it you. I was actually thinking of an argument that came up during a Planning and Zoning class I took in college.

Where in the hell do you people live that is so unsafe?

I live in Chicago, and I don't have a gun. I was wondering the same thing. I would think that the city would be a hell of a lot more dangerous than Texas.

Bad people exist everywhere - even in quaint suburbia.

Well yes, I realize this. But I would think a break in would be far more likely here than where you are, KWIM?

I felt 100% more safe living in a rural area than living in an urban one, and I even have a police station only a few blocks away. I do not feel safe here at all.

Ditto, Kel. I live in the middle of nowhere, and we usually don't even lock the door, let alone prepare for an armed force to storm the gates. Heck, half the time, I leave my purse and wallet in my unlocked car.

Lori - first the mental image of someone playing reville in your bedroom made me spew coffee.  literally.

Second, now that we live in a very rural, small town we hardly ever have our doors locked when we're home.  my car stays locked and we lock up at night, but NEVER when we're home.

heck my mom's neighbor randomly walks in her house to borrow eggs or sugar and vice versa.  i like that sort of of hometown living and missed it when i lived in the city (although i still knew my neighbors in my building there).

Glad you realized I wasn't really making fun of your typo. I just love a good accidental joke.

And that is exactly the kind of place we live. I've had my neighbors pop their heads into my kitchen while I'm doing dishes to see if I need anything while they are running to the store.

I do crime reporting in our area. I know exactly what kind of crime we have and what we don't. The break-ins we have are at hunting camps, out of season, and if you leave your guns at your hunting camp, you might as well leave some cookies out for the guys that are coming to steal them.

In my area, violent crime is generally committed by people you know. I've covered at least 30 murders in 20 years. One was committed by a stranger. Two are unsolved, but the most likely but as yet unproven scenarios for both are family or friends.

And if there is a violent crime in my home, I'm more likely to be the one getting cuffed for it. ::glares at the troll who just walked through the kitchen::

  • I live in Naperville.  The idea of being robbed in my richy rich house makes me LOL.  Paranoia will destroy ya :)

  • I love the night time gun rituals.  I have one too.  I take a charged phone and leave it by my bed.  If I heard anything, I would call 911 and have them there in 2 minutes.  Grab my kid and lock ourselves in the walkin closet which is behind 2 lockable doors.  (My bedroom and the bathroom)

The large plant at the top of the stairs and the baseball bat are my back ups.

  •  Guns scare the bejebus out of me but after I heard this 911 call, the idea of having one in the house didn't seem to scary.  It took over 20 minutes for the cops to arrive at this ladies house.  Here's the link....

I know that probably wouldn't happen where I live since I'm in a suburban location.  I still will probably never own a gun.  I'll just call my next door neighbor who is an ex cop if I ever need help right away. I know he has guns.  I sometimes get his gun magazines in the mail by accident.

  • I'm also wondering where you all live that you think you need an unlocked loaded gun for protection.

I'm thinking back to a apartment I had in NJ while in graduate school.  After I moved in I noticed that there were an awful lot of prostitutes on the street corner at night.  Plus, I'd swear the next door neighbor was into something ... what grown man hangs out on their porch all.day.long with a bunch or late teenage/early 20s guys?

Often I'd get home from the lab at 2 AM.  Never did I think having a gun would provide more protection as I dashed from my car to my front door.

When I moved to PA for my post doc I was in the "good" part of town. My downstairs neighbor sold drugs out of the house.  My upstairs neighbor was arrested for throwing his girlfriend down the stairs.  I never thought a gun would make that situation safer either.

Now we live in a house in a nice suburb right outside the city limits.  My neighbor was punched in the face taking the trash out at 7 PM at night.  Once again, I don't think a gun would have helped in this situation.

I guess, all I'm saying here is even having lived in "unsafe" places, I still don't comprehend having a loaded gun in the house.  I also find it strange that people would feel the most unsafe in upscale gated communities.
