The people I know with guns have them for hunting. I don't care if people own them, but I personally could not. Before we bought this house we rented with some other people. One of our housemates committed suicide in the basement with his gun.
well that's almost true. he hunts. most of the meat we eat throughout winter is venison and wild turkey.
we don't have hand guns b/c i mean, let's be real here....what the heck for? if we had it in the house it would have to be unloaded and in a safety box (for obvious reasons regarding children) and if someone was attacking us it would hardly come in handy if it took 10 minutes just to unlock the safe and load the thing.
oh and i'm really not that worried about needing anything to "defend" myself. neither is dh.

If someone were to break into our house (don't really live in a dangerous area, but you still don't know what crazies are out there), we want to be able to protect ourselves. Plus, DH grew up hunting, so has always been around guns.

I don't have a gun, and I wish I did. I do have a taser, but not the kind that shoots darts. My theory is, if someone is willing to break into my house, I'm pretty sure they won't be willing to not harm me or my children before the police have a chance to respond.
i get that people have guns for hunting. those that i know with hunting guns keep them locked in a safe unloaded at all times. dh and i don't hunt, so there's really no point for us to have them.
if you have them for protection, where do you keep it? how do you ensure that dc will never get to that gun?

Biometric fingerprint safe. They run around $300, and only the person who's finger matches can open it. My dad has one of these. I never even knew we had a gun in our house growing up. It was never flaunted or shown, but we were always taught to respect fire arms.
I live in a good area. But an honest to goodness crackhead named Mike-Mike wanders around our neighborhood begging for food, and slept in my husband's car for a good week before we found out. He seems harmless, and the cops have been called several times. But who knows what he, or his friends, might do.
Also if you look at crime statistics you will see that most crimes, ie home invasions do not happen in "bad/shady areas". If someone is coming in my house and going to hurt my child or myself well then they are taking the risk.

Mine is for protection when I'm outside our home. At home, we have a monitored security system and a big mean dog, so the pistol is locked in a safe with a combination keypad. When I'm out, I'm wearing the gun. I am licensed to carry in the state of TX, and also any state with which TX has a reciprocity agreement.

for hunting. My bro does have a handgun that he also uses for hunting (but he doesn't live w/ us)...and probably when out in the woods. As the area where the cabin is, is where they displace troubled wolves too...nice...there has been a number of attacks (on dogs though, not people, yet).

My husband is a police officer, so there are several guns in our house. We keep them locked up and in safe places when ds is home. We also have a security system on our home, but guns are for the extra protection. DH also carries a gun with him every where he goes, even if it's to run out to the gas station.

ugh. i'm sorry!
us too, don't be sorry, my dad shot us a whole deer. The deer here is delish b/c its corn/wheat fed. I just got 2 roasts and 12 lbs of ground venison.
We had guns growing up b/c we were poor and shot all of our meat. I don't have one at my home, but my dad keeps my rifle at the farm for when I come to visit. I like to shoot blue rock. (aka clay pigeons). I have a tazer for protection :P And I do live in the ghetto. most of my neighbors are drug dealers.

We have a gun safe that is mounted in the wall in MH's closet at shoulder-level. It only opens with my fingerprint or my husband's. A .45 is kept in there, loaded. There is no way anyone other than one of us could ever get to it.
Can't believe I just admitted that (I'm Canadian, we don't own hand guns!). But MH is A'mur-i-can! and embraces his right to bear arms. But if someone broke into my house with the intent to harm, you betcha I would come after them with guns-a-blazing.

of course! lol
My husband hunts. He has different guns for different things.
Houston's a rough town. If someone's going to come after me I at least want to put up a good fight.

dh likes to shoot squirrels on his porch.

DH also likes to go to the shooting range. I don't get it.... I've been once and I didn't see the appeal.

no worries - i felt the same way for a long time (i'm a recovering vegetarian), but it's actually quite tasting. venison fajitas are delish! mmm.

We need guns to kill our food. I like deer.

Exactly - plus DH works in a shady area and we've had our truck stolen twice, so its better to be prepared than not.

Nope, we live in a nice area, gated; however, that doesn't mean that we're 100% safe from whomever wants to come in our neighborhood and do whatever.
And, yes, it is our gosh darned right.
We don't shoot squirrels or any other animals. Our guns are for protection and sport (shooting range, etc).
