At what age for the shape sorter?

At what age do they really "do" the shape sorter? DD gets the concept that the shapes are supposed to fit in the holes, but she's a long way off from figuring out which shape goes where. She just randomly shoves any old shape in any old hole.

I don't exactly know what age they start sorting, maybe close to 18 months? ds is 11.5 mo and he just rips the lid off the shape sorter, dumps the shapes out, then fills the bucket with various other toys.

sometimes my friends' 3 year old twins have trouble w/ it!  (although they cdan do it when they want to).

this is a good question! my DS has no idea that the shapes are even supposed to go in the holes!

DD has recently starting putting the round circle shape in the proper hole but the other's she can't do yet.

DD learned around 12-13 months.  I think that's pretty average.
