NE1 w/ too much milk?

Since I produced milk for twins not that long ago and Tessa came out a super sucker - I mean, we didn't have to work at bf @ all - I have SOOOO much milk!

I've decided NOT to pump in order for my body to adjust to Tessa's needs but in the meantime, she drowns @ almost every feeding.  She doesn't know enough to stop feeding when she's full so she ends up gagging and spitting up.

Anyone have tips?

  • Man, I don't know that answer.  I know Adleigh gags a lot, but I have a super fast let down this time, and I never have before.

OK, I just went back to see how old she is.  She's only four days old, so give it a week or so, and your milk will probably level off to her needs.  I did have what seemed like a lot more milk at first, but I thought htat was pretty common.

  • When you feel the letdown or when she pulls off, spray into a towl until your milk slows down and then let her latch back on.  Also you could try just feeding on one side per feeding, if she needs burped in between put her back on the same side.  If it is really bad you could fed the same side for several feedings in a row but I haven't had to do that yet.

  • I feel your pain -- I went through/am going through the same thing!  I second the towel suggestion when your milk lets down.  I also got some great advice from one of my friends who has been nursing for like the last 8 years of her life:
    1.  For the first week or two, when your milk has just come in and your body is adjusting, go braless and wrap a towel (or just change shirts a lot) as much as possible so the excess can drip away and not get stored up and spray LO when you nurse next.
    2.  After things have settled down a little bit, try nursing on one side for four hours, then switching to the other side for four hours, or nursing twice on one side and then twice on the other.  This one takes longer but seems to be working well for me at least!  The trick is to pump just enough to get comfortable but no more if you get to feeling too full on the side you haven't used in a while.  At the very least, this should cut down the spraying to every other feeding . . .

    Good luck!
