How long after your finalization did you receive your amended birth certificate so that you could file for a SSN?
Also, I believe you must have this birth certificate and a SSN in order to claim the child on your taxes in April even though it's an adoption, correct? If so, what do couples do if they don't have this before April 15th? File for an extension??
Any advice and information from those that have been through this would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Birth Certificate-SSN for taxes in April
You need a temporary adoption tax ID number. You should speak with your attorney or accountant. You most likely will not have the SS before taxes. So you will be issues a temporary one but you need to apply for it. You do not need the BC in order to obtain this but you will need placement agreement/something from hospital/or court order proving the placement.

Form W-7A
It can take at least 6 weeks to get a new birth certificate. Like the PP said, you should've gotten a ATIN (temporary number) as soon as you brought you LO home. We called the week we got back with Ben which was in June and didn't receive the ATIN number until September and that was after calling 3 times and then they gave it to me over the phone and 3 weeks later I got it in the mail.
There is a form on the IRS website to fill out. I would take it to the local IRS office and see if they could expediate things. If not, I would file for an extension because you definitely want this for your taxes.
I'm a little suprised your agency or attorney didn't tell you to get this ATIN. I wouldn't have known anything about it if we hadn't been told. We also couldn't claim the tax credit until the finalization. So Ben was born in 2007, but we didn't finalize until 2008 and couldn't claim the credit until we filed taxes in 2009. Good Luck!
