I need decorating advice...

I've been in a decorating rut since Kennedy was born (ha, no time or money!) but I've finally decided that I need to do something with my fireplace/mantel area.

I need some suggestions! What do you think should go in this space? Mirror? Painting? Collection of paintings or artwork?

Here is what it looks like now: image

I want to keep the vases on the mantel but other than that, everything else can go.

 Any suggestions?

I've been eyeing some oil paintings on etsy... something like this:

Also, AmandaBrooke inspired me today to think about installing some sconces on either side of the mantel.. we desperately need light in this room.

Here are some that caught my eye:

  • The picture of the mantle is just a big red box for me, for some reason, but in deciding between a mirror or painting, I always ask myself...

    1. size of the room- if it's a small room with little natural light, then I would go with a mirror.  It will help make the room appear bigger and reflect some more light.

    2. if it's a big room then go with the paintings b/c they helped to bring a focal point to a big room with a lot of light.

I love the last sconce set, bc I like the idea of you putting your own touch by finding your own lampshades.

You have great style, Lydia, and everything always turns out wonderful, so I'm sure it will look great when you are finished!

This. Every word of Jackie's post!

Wish I could see the 1st pic, but it's not showing up for me either. I know I've seen your living room though from photos on your Nest blog...just can't remember.

I'm a big fan of mirrors though...just like how they make rooms appear much larger. Caveat: make sure mirrors reflect something either fantastic, pleasant, or light. And my vote is for the last sconce too.

Lydia, you've got great style anyhow so I'm sure whatever you choose, it'll turn out great.

Side Note: After I finished the nursery, I posted it Online at Rate My Space along with some of my other rooms. I received a lot of feedback and odd comments too BUT there were some nuggets of decorating wisdom that I appreciated. Just an idea =)
