rocking back and forth while sitting?

Someone please tell me you have a perfectly normal child who does this. Mason is suddenly doing it all the time. I think it is just something new he has figured out he can do and likes. At least I hope. He looks around the room while doing it, smiles, makes noise, if I snap or say his name from behind me he stops and turns to grin at me. In general he is extremely social as well. He laughs, smiles, makes eye contact, etc. He only makes about 2-3 different noises compared to Wyatt's 20 so we were already talking about having his hearing retested. So now this on top of that is freaking me out though. I'm certain they both need ECI evals. Wyatt has stuff going on that I can't even get into. But Medicaid has completely screwed us over to where I can't even take them in for a 6 month well check unless I drive to Georgetown(!) to a doctor who has never even seen them before. So frustrating. :(

Re: rocking back and forth while sitting?

  • I think it is normal especially seeing as you are able to snap him out of it.  Both boys did that during their sitting phase but would do it off and on (not with any sort of regularity).

But, I really wanted to say that you need to let me know when you do trek up to GT and we can make a playdate out of it.  :)  And, if you are ever in need of going to the pedi up here, I am happy to help out with the boys.

  • Layna went through a head-banging phase.  Sitting, lying on her tummy, whatever.  She looked like she was at a Metallica concert  :)

    I'm sure he's fine.  Really.

  • I hope so, because J does this all.the.time!  He started doing it right around Mason's age.  He is delayed in some of his physical milestones but is right on track, or een early, with the cognitive ones, so I have just racked it up to he likes the rocking motion. I did plan on asking his Ped about it at his 9 month check, which is next week.  I will letyou know what she says.

     That sucks about your insurance!

  • Yeah, here's something interesting I just had explained to me yesterday by someone in the Office of the Ombudsman. There are no pedis in my county  (knew that, no big surprise) and the two neighboring counties can't take our plan, which are Hays & Travis (didn't know that) and we can't switch to the plan the neighboring counties use because it isn't offered in our county (knew that). Williamson is the next closest county that accepts our plan, so that's why I couldn't find anyone who isn't way north. So, why would you put a plan in place in a county knowing there are no pedis and then not allow the residents to see pedis in neighboring counties. They were explaining some stuff to me yesterday that completely disgusts me. This system is a ridiculous jumble of public and private agencies, none of whom know what the others do or even necessarily what they do. Ask two different people in the same agency the same question, get two different answers. Angry I'm off to write letters to HHSC, my congressman...whoever else I can find to send them to. I think we have this half sorted out now. I can request to transfer to traditional Medicaid, but it takes 30 days. In the meantime I can get a non-network referral to see our pedi for sick visits, but no one can figure out what to do with us for well visits still. Why are well visits different, you ask? Because those are handled by yet another separate agency. Confused

  • I can't believe the system is so messed up.  Well, wait, yes I absolutely can!  Certainly you aren't the only people with children that this affects in your entire county.  I wish the "system(s)" could get their thumbs out of their butts and WORK for people - that's what they are supposed to be there for.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with this.  I also think the rocking can be a normal thing for babies to do.  The fact that he makes eye contact and snaps out of it is also in your favor.

I think the deal is that most people just go to the Family Practice quack, er doc, here and are fine with that. If you need an antibiotic for your kid's ear infection he is your guy. If you are looking for help with development delays related to prematurity, not so much. I think I am in the minority for being concerned enough that my kids see an actual pedi to really push it. Honestly, most people here wouldn't have a clue what an ombudsman was, much less track the office down and file a complaint. And really, I think they know that so they get away with not providing the same level of care here that they do in the city. :( I feel really strongly about taking my kids to a pedi since they have specialized knowledge about the issues we are dealing with, so I am officially a pain in the state's arse. :)

  • I don't know anything about the "system" but the rocking back and forth ... appears to also produce ... fine people Wink My mother apparently did it and she is one of the most well adjusted people I've ever known. My sister I can say for sure did it (and as her older sister, it was super annoying, but that's the worst thing I can say about it). She isn't ... normal ... (but she says the same thing about me) but she was the  valedictorian of her class, so at least she's smart. A little OCD and she gets easily annoyed with us normal sized brain people Wink but otherwise, she's fine. Both Mom and sister did it well into their elementary school years. SIGH.
  • When I was younger my mom ran a daycare in our home, and I specifically remember one little girl who rocked all through toddler-hood.  sitting on, or even in front of, a couch or chair, she would just rock and rock and rock, with her back hitting the back of the couch.  She would also suck on the corner of a burp cloth while she did it, it was her "security" thing.  She was otherwise just like any of the other toddlers, very well-adjusted and had no developmental issues.  Now she's all grown up and wildly successful.  I agree that if he hears and acknowledges you, you can snap him out of it, and he makes eye contact with you, these are all good things and I'd try not to worry too much about it.

Sorry about all the rest of the medical red-tape you're going through.  Are there no pedis in Cedar Park/Leander that you could see?  I know it's still quite a hike for you, but might be closer than GT.  And I'll ditto lrb about if/when you need to come to GT - I'd be happy to help out with the boys if it's on a day I'm off.
