Compost help?

We recently moved into a new home and I am going to make an attempt to start composting and start a garden before expecting LO at the end of June.  The garden I think I have under control, but the composting I've never done so I'm looking for any tips or suggestions, maybe a good reference website.  I was thinking of using wood pallets to create the bin.  I will have a tough time finding dead leaves and grass clippings this time of year, but I atleast want to get the bin(s) set up so once the snow stops I can hopefully get on the ball.  Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!!!
