Snow storms causing labor?

All my friends are going out of their way to tell me to be careful this weekend because storms cause labor. I'm in DC, where we're expecting up to 20 inches.  Is there any medical backing to this, or is it another old wives tale that they're pulling out of their a$$es?

  • I think that only happens on soap operas... LOL

Do you really need to ask this? Sounds like they are just going with Murphy's Law of whatever the hell it is.

Yeah, the electricity in the air from all of those snowflakes falling has been known to cause contractions. But only if the woman has eaten three pineapples soaked in castor oil.

    LOL

  • I'm expecting to go into labor during the snow storm this weekend just because it'd be Murphy's Law: trying to get to the hospital in a snow storm won't be fun at all!!

But I don't think there's any medical backing to it...It's not like full moons where L&D nurses will tell you it's CRAZY during a full moon.

  • A friend of mine through work went into labor with the snow storm this past December. All I know is if my LO decides to be funny like that we are calling the ambulance because our vehicles are not fully equipped for that level of snow and or if a state of emergency is called it is unlawful for us to drive.

ETA: I am not anticipating anything, just saying as an example.

  • Actually, according to what I've heard, it has to do with the barometric pressure being so low it causes water breakage. They say the same things about ALL low pressure systems though - Tstorms, tornados, etc.

That being said, how many bumpies sat around waiting on that full moon last week to no avail?

I'm gonna go with Murphy's law as well, and say that I heard today its up to 24-36 inches, so I hope your H can drive in snow! ;) If not, I have 4wd... just hit me up! HAHA

You forgot about the loads of sex you're supposed to be having because you're cooped up in the house and the power is so there's nothing better to do!

WTF - I didn't know they upped it to 24-36 inches!  If this baby is anything like me, he/she will stay put in my warm ute until it's warmer outside.

  • The receptionist at my OB office said the same thing.  Told me she didn't want to schedule me for next Wednesday bc I would go into labor this weekend.  I said well if it happens because of the snow storm I'll make you a homemade Zucchini Bread.  We are also expecting 20" and then apparently they are calling for another storm on Tuesday.  Guess we'll see...I'm ready!

  • I was at my OB appt this morning and she jokingly said something about the barometric pressure dropping and that they always seem to be busier during storms.  Luckily, we had 4WD!

  • Yes the barometric pressure is the thing that could do it for us!! That said, I joked when we were first told when the due date was that LO would be born in a snow storm. I was  born in a snow storm and my mom barely made it to the hospital. So I feel like I totally jinxed us- of course I didnt feel any better when I lost my muscus plug this morning. I know that doesnt mean too much, but it is a funny coincidence.  DH tells me he is going to strap me to the back of his ATV that has a plow on the front :-)
  • I hope not! They are calling for 36 inches here and there is no way I'm going to be able to get to the hospital.

This.  I'm glad I'm not having this baby during hurricane season!

  • I'm so glad you asked this. I was just told the same thing at my OB's office. I wasn't sure if they were serious or not.
