Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

He smells like maple syrup

Wasn't there another nestie who posted about this?  I really don't think it's that horrible Maple Syrup Urine Disease (I'm pretty sure that's apparent at birth), but I am starting to get a little concerned.  It's coming from his jammies when he first gets up in the morning...  This is day 2 of it--I guess if it happens tomorrow I will call the pedi and ask about diabetes, or anything else it could be. Tongue Tied

Anyone else noticed this?

Re: He smells like maple syrup

  • it doesn't just happen to newborns, you should call your pedi right away - there is a nestie on the DC babies board whose toddler has the same, they are testing her now and have even sent lab work to the Mayo clinic

    do not ingore it

  • There was a post on 6-12 about it.  The baby turned out not to have MSUD.

I've caught a whiff of maple syrup coming off of my DD once or twice recently in the morning or after a nap.  I plan on asking my pedi about it at DD's next appointment.

Okay, I am now sufficiently panicked and calling the pedi.

  • Our DS smells like this too. Actually its always in the morning. We brought it up to PEDI. She basically said that it has to do with the concentration of urine and the interaction of the diaper material.

In massachusetts all newborns are tested for MSUD automatically at birth and DS was negative.

MSUD is EXTREMELY RARE and has lots of other symptoms.

  • Yeah, he's not showing any other symptoms.  After a quick google search, apparently nebraska doesn't test for this as newborns, though.  Bummer.

  • Your DS is perfectly fine. My FIL is a physician and MULTIPLE times over the last 16 months we've had him smell his pj's hahahahaha!!!

It's just the diaper/pj material and urine mixing all together. Talk to your pedi but relax. He seems like s beautiful healthy toddler!

OK, that was an old site.  Found an updated one and MSUD is tested--yay.  I know, DS is thriving and perfect.  My only concern is diabetes, as that runs heavily on DH's side of the family.  But...he probably just has stinky pee, you're right!

  • I've posted about this a couple times lately! I'm on a mission to determine the source. My current theories are that the smell comes out when she's cutting teeth or when she's eaten dill pickles. Either ring a bell for you today? DD's clothes have reeked of it lately! (but not everyday)

I am not concerned about Maple Syrup Urine Disease or diabetes. As another nestie put it (LoriFalce? Can't remember who...), I've decided that my DD just randomly smells like waffles. :)

  • When that other person posted about it, I freaked because I thought Owen smelled like maple syrup as well. I did some searching on it before calling my pedi. From what I read, the urine mixes with the diaper material but also if they sweat or pee through a diaper a little bit onto fleece pajamas. I have 2 pairs of fleece pajamas that definitely do this, can't remember the brand off the top of my head though. Hope that helps.

Yes!!  It is on his fleece pajamas, and his diapers are, of course, more full overnight.  This makes me feel infinitely better. Thank you!
