Two Under 2

anyone's kids share a room?

we're looking at houses at the moment and one that i really like has the big drawback of having three rooms but one is on the first floor. We're not comfortable with a 2 year old being on a separate floor, or a newborn obviously... DD would sleep in with us for at least 6 months and then we're wondering what it would be like to have them share. The master is definitely big enough that we could take the smaller room and put both of them in the master but we're not sure how well it would work... just looking for any experiences I guess. Thanks!

Re: anyone's kids share a room?

  • We have 3 br, but since all of our family is 400+ miles away, we decided to keep the guest room (plus there is insanely big antique furniture in there, and we'd have to get a storage unit if we moved it out!).

The new baby slept in our room in a bassinet for about 2 months.  Then, we had had enough of hearing every little noise, so we moved the bassinet into the guest room.  At 3.5 months, we started the room sharing.  We had added the 2nd crib a while ago, so the older child didn't think anything of it being there.  We started by putting the baby in after he woke up to eat at night (so he went to bed in the bassinet and finished in the shared room).  Later we just started putting him in the crib at bed time.  We're lucky that he totally conks out so even having a super-talkative 2-year-old doesn't seem to bother him.  And, our daughter is a better sleeper than we gave her credit for-  she has yet to wake up when he wakes up at night.

So, we've only been doing this for about a month, but so far, no problems.

  • We are working on transitioning to a shared room right now.  DS2 has been in our room/bed since birth and I'm ready for them to share a room even though he is not STTN yet (grrr).

I first tried with a shared naptime and one day was enough for me.  We had enough other stresses in our life that I didn't want to deal with that.

They share a room at night with no problems at all.  I'm pleasantly surprised with how easily they both go to sleep at night.  DS2 still gets up to eat and I bring him to our room then.  We will work on shared naps soon, I hope!

  • The girls share a room.  They are a little more than 2 years apart.  We have another room but they pretty much only use their room to sleep so I didn't want to give up the guest room.  Plus I think it will be fun when they are a little older to share a room

We moved the baby into the room about a month ago.  We haven't had any problems so far.  We have always been noisy while the kids are sleeping so they are used to noise.  When either one cries (neither STTN consistently) the other doesn't stir.  They go to bed at different times but their bedtime routines are quiet and don't disturb the other.

  • We are planning to share a room once our new little one arrives.  We have moved our son into his "big boy" toddler bed which he loves and starting preparing the crib.  The goal is to keep her in the room with us for a few months and then move them into together.  My son is still not a very good sleeper so we will see how long this lasts.  He might earn himself a big boy room.

  • We have 4 bedrooms and 4 kids.  Two upstairs rooms and two downstairs so the two oldest sleep downstairs and me and hubby sleep upstairs in the smaller room while the two little ones 16 months apart share the master bedroom.   I thought about it for soo long then finally the deciding factor was me realizing who would have the most stuff in their rooms.  So that would be the babies,  2 cribs, carseats, bouncers and swing plus all the toys (oohhh all the toys.......lol.  So that was how i decided.
