But I'll ask anyway. This is my first pregnancy so I don't know what is considered normal and what is not. I am 33 weeks pregnant and LO has been moving like crazy all morning. She is usually very active and because of this, my OB said I don't have to do kick counts. I didn't eat anything different this morning - usual bowl of cereal with a glass of OJ. I'm glad she's moving a lot but it's starting to freak me out because it's more than usual and it's making me think she's freaking out or something's wrong. So my question is, should I be concerned with her more than usual movement? TIA!
Re: May be a dumb question....
No.
i am going to be the odd one and say 'keep a close watch'. It is VERY ODD that your doctor told you to skip kick counts. I would still do the kick counts - and especially watch for any decrease in normal activity. If you see a decrease, lay down and have a glass of cold water (the baby should become active almost instantly). If there is no change and baby is not active in the next 10 - 30 min - head straight to the hospital to have them check the baby (they will most likely start with a non-stress test that tracks baby's heart rate, then they may follow up with a quick ultrasound to check for fluid levels around the baby). Even though every baby is different and it is perfectly alright to have a very active one, watch for any decrease in activity, don't be afraid to look paranoid when you call the doctor or show up at the hospital.
I don't want to freak you out, but i think it may be helpful to know - my first pregnancy was uneventful, I had a DD, second - baby was kicking like mad all the time. Then i had a sudden decrease in movements that i attributed to my cold symptoms - it got me worried, the next day when i came in to check just to be sure (and i felt so stupid for calling the office) there was no heart beat! they sent me to the hospital to do the ultrasound - same thing - no heart beat... too late .... baby was 33 and 1/2 weeks along, there were no signs of any problems up till then! When she was stillborn (induced labor) the following day she had umbilical cord tightly wrapped around her thigh and the doctors believe this was the likely cause - she got tangled up and it cut off her circulation... Probably why she was kicking so much - trying to get that wrapped up cord off... :-(
Once again - i don't want to freak you out - just keep my example in the back of your mind - and count those kicks.... I wish you the best :-)
I'm sorry to share this with you, but i feel compelled to tell you your dr. is SO wrong about the kick counts. You should ALWAYS be aware of your baby's movements. I'm not saying be obsessive, just know the patterns and have some idea.
My daughter was stillborn at 39 wks,. the stupid nurse told me my baby was getting bigger and I should not be alarmed of the decrease in movements. I felt weird at my 38 wk appt and was dismissed. The following week there was no heartbeat and it was too late.
I don't mean to freak anyone out, but it pisses me off how the medical community does not stress the importance of kick counts. I think movement of any kind is better than none.
precisely!
