My insurance covers Vanderbilt Hospital, which is one of the best hospitals in the country.. but my friend carried multiples and said that it was too big an impersonal. She had a different Dr. for every check up and many times they would come in and not even know that she was having twins. She ended up delivering at Baptist hospital and had the same Dr. every time. It was a female Dr. who also has a set of twins. She said she had a great experience there, except the nurses over-drugged her at one point when she was in a lot of pain. Also, she said that it had dirty waiting rooms..
My family is pushing me to deliver at Vanderbilt. I was partial to it at first because they also have midwives. Now that I'm having twins, I don't know how much they will be able to do for me. I'm just not sure. What do you think is more important, a clean and advanced facility or a place where people know your situation?
Re: Where to deliver...?
The first priority should be the level of the NICU. You need at least a level III NICU. If Vanderbilt has it and the other hospital doesn't, then your choice has been made for you. If they both have the same level NICU, then it becomes a more personal preference and I would probably discuss with the OB and/or MFM that is going to deliver you.
What are your twins type?
We are delivering at the same hospital that we had DD (with midwives), but they have a Level III NICU, our Dr and his team are MFM's and have a great deal of experience with high risk pregnancies, multiples, and TTTS (since we have mo-di twins).
I would make your choice based on their level of expertise in twin pregnancy and delivery. You can always switch if you don't like the care you are giving. Best of luck!
Steal my kids picture or pretend they are yours, I will find where you live and ship all of their dirty diapers to your doorstep. Promise.
Ditto on the recommendation for picking the hosptial with the best NICU.
Ditto what everyone else said about the NICU. I'd also want to have a good MFM/peri group too.
For Vandy though, are there multiple OB groups that deliver there? Could it be that your friend's group was big but that there may be other groups that are smaller and more personal? I know at our university hospital, there is the big OB group affiliated with the hospital, but there are still a few other community docs that deliver there too.
