Sleep training...how long does it really take to work??

So...we are in the midst of sleep training at our house (somewhat torn on the issue).  To be honest I am NOT a CIO advocate but something has to change and we really feel as if it will be best for DS to learn to fall asleep and stay asleep.  So we are going against our instincts to do what may be better for him-to be more rested.

Anyway, I have heard over and over that sleep training takes 3 nights!!  I am just feeling really discouraged-because tonight will be night 3-and it seems as if we are NOWHERE near the end of the tears.

I am wondering if you did sleep training with your LO-how long did it take before you could put them in their crib and only have a few mins (if any) tears before they put themselves to sleep?

I am really on the edge of giving in....

TIA!!

  • Do not give in, or all of the previous nights will have been a waste!!!  Every LO is different- some only do take 3 nights, but my friend's daughter took 9.  Her daughter now STTN.  It will be worth it if you stick it out now- otherwise you might find yourself having to start over at square 1 in a month or two.  Hang in there!

  • CIO took about a week total.  Nights 1-3 were hard, but it kept getting better every night.  I used a notebook to take note of the cries and wakings and it was evident that there was improvement each night, but she didn't fully STTN until about night 8.

  • It took about a week, but well worth it in the end. He sleeps so much better now. I am now working on his naps so we will see how that goes.
