Postpartum Depression

Anyone have bad experiences with Anti-depressants but

are still looking for/find a solution?

I have terrible Perinatal Anxiety/Depression.  For the most part my panic attacks have sub-sided.  I have been working with my OB since I was 10wks pregnant, I had PPD with my DD.   I also see a therapist.

In December around xmas, I first tried Lexapro as I am looking to feel better.  It made me start throwing up within 4hours.  It heightened my anxiety and I did not sleep at night.  I took it two days and basically wiped myself out. I had to go to my parents without DD to recover.

I spoke with my OB and we tried Zoloft next and at the lowest possible dose.  The first day was okay, I just felt weird.  I took it over the course of 4 days and each day I got progressively worse.  By the last night I was waking every 90 min in panic attacks and I was throwing up.  Once again I had to recover at my parents house without DD.  Thankfully it was xmas week and DH could stay with DD.

Needless to say I was and have been very scared to try anything else.  At the same time I am still experiencing PPD/A (during pregnancy) and while it is not as severe, it can still be bad.  I know I can try something else and will discuss with my OB & therapist, I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that had bad experiences like mine and did find an anti-depressant that worked.

Thanks for reading.

Re: Anyone have bad experiences with Anti-depressants but

  • i never really found a drug i liked, but i tried 3 and welbutrin worked ok so i just stuck with it.  i think it was prozac that made me unconsciously clench my jaw, which i tend to do when i'm really stressed out.  i didn't feel stressed out, but did it anyway.  it sounds dumb, but doing that all day gets to be pretty painful after a while.  i ended up switching to a psychiatrist to help me iron out the medications, since that is their specialty.  the only part that sucks about that is the wait lists for psychiatrists is pretty long, every one i called it was about 2 to 3 months to get in.

since you're having pretty awful side effects i'd definitely see if i could get in to see a psychiatrist, they would have more insight on what you're going through than your OB.  for #2 i have found a new person (she's a nurse with prescribing privileges) to help me manage meds, she treats a lot of patients for PPD/PPA/pregnancy related issues so i'm hoping i'll get better solutions than i did from the general psychiatrist i saw last time.

  • I have not found my perfect drug either.  I stopped my Lexapro and Klonopin in December and will not take anything until I'm seen by a psychiatrist and they stamp me crazy.

That appt is next Tuesday morning...

  • I've tried a few. Paxil only worked for 2 years for me. I have found that Prozac is pretty good with minimal side effects. It definitely calms the panic attacks for me. Lexapro was awful for me and I've tried a few others (forget the all now!) but mostly if it gave me a headache I stopped using and switched to another.

  • I'd highly recommend seeing a psychiatrist to help in finding the right medication.  My regular doctor prescribed me Paxil - which made me really sick, then Zoloft - which made me more anxious.  I saw a psychiatrist and she prescribed me Celexa which works like a charm for me.  A psychiatrist knows much more about the nuances of each medication and they are much better at figuring out which one might work for you.  It still might take a few tries, but they are much more informed about the medications than a general practitioner or an OB.  Good luck!
