Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If you wake your LO at 10/11pm for a feeding...

LO goes to sleep around 7:30/8pm.  She gets up around 7am.  Last night she went to bed at 6:30pm and was up at 6:30am.  (No she doesnt sleep straight through).  She gets up twice - usually 1/2am and 4/5am.  Id like to try getting her up around 10/11pm for a feeding to see if it helps her sleep through the night more and gets her up later in the mornings.  Any moms do this?  What is your schedule?  How do you wake up LO and how long are you keeping her up?

Re: If you wake your LO at 10/11pm for a feeding...

  • Yup, I do this. On a typical night (5/7 nights or so), it goes like this:

    -down for bed ar 6:30-7pm

-wake her up around 10:30-11 pm (about 4-5 hours after last bottle, which is usually about 3-4 hours after sleep)

-she then doesnt wake up till 6:30 am or so the next morning

If I don't do this, and I put her down at 7pm, she wakes up after a good 7 hr stretch still, but at 2 am, which is so early! :P

    Try it. Couldn't hurt!

  • when u get LO up for feeding...how do u wake her? how long do u keep her up? r u changing her too?
  • Yes I do this, although he does not always wake up at this time, but he will eat, so I guess it is a "dreamfeed".

He goes to sleep in the swing between 8-9:00.  I bring him up around 10-10:30, change/feed him then put him down and he is down until anywhere between 5-7am.  At that point he is changed and brought in to my bed by my husband to sleep with me for another hour or so.. he isn't fed at that time, just changed and unswaddled.

We have been doing this all along.  He cut out his 2:30-3:30am feeding on his own around 12 weeks when we began double swaddling him.

  • To wake her, I go to her crib, put my hand on her chest and say "Hi Hailey", softly a few times, till she begins to wiggle. Then I open her swaddle, and then by the time I lift her up and put her on her change table, she's awake.

Yes, I change her for two reasons: 1. It wakes her up more, which leads to a better feeding. 2. I put a 12 hr Pampers Baby Dry diaper on at that point to hopefully last till morning. If I was "dreamfeeding" her (feeding her in her sleep), I wouldnt change her because I dont want to wake her.

I keep her up long enough to change her, feed her, burp her, and let her sit for a few minutes (she has reflux). This is usually about 45 minutes (whereas in the day, she'd be up for 1.5 hrs between naps). I dont look at the clock at night, like I dont try to keep her awake for a long time. Just long enough to feed her.

    Hope that helps!

  • That does help!  My LO has reflux too.  (dont they all these days) Ive been going to bed at 9pm and not wanting to wake up at 10/11 for a feeding but sounds like its much better to do that then a few times in the middle of the night.  Thanks so much.

Yeah, I figure 10:30 pm is better than 3 am :)

Plus, I'm usually up till then anyway.

One word of advice, don't go past 11 pm as I hear it actually does more harm than good with their sleep.

  • That's exactly what we do with our twins.  Down at 7-7:30, up at 11-11:30, change into an overnight diaper, feed(bottle, they are BF during the day and take bottles at night), back to bed until anywhere between 5-7.  To wake them up I just unswaddle and give them a minute to squirm, then I change them.  Usually they are a bit fitful and eager to get back to sleep.
