My neighbor sells Uppercase Living, so she has a bunch in her house. They have knock down on their walls and they went on fine. I hear that its more important that you have a clean wall than anything.
My walls are plaster, so they aren't smooth but they aren't textured either and the decals that I have stick fine.

I bought a large one for above DD's crib on etsy (Expressing You maybe the name of the seller) and it was a slight PITA to apply....just took some time, effort and a laser leveler! But there was one teensy tiny spot on the wall that was not smooth and it bugs me! So, I probably wouldn't use them on textured walls.
We have may-jah texture on our walls. (Not my choice...they are plaster). I have several Upper Case Living things on our walls. It isn't easy to get them on just right, but it is possible. Here is the one in our bedroom. You can see the texture in the picture:
