f/u to our kids who smell like maple syrup: a new theory

Tonight DD reeked of maple syrup again. Well, first of all, I have no doubt that her teeth are definitely hurting her tonight. She wouldn't nap today, has been a total crank, has been literally chewing on her index finger, and would only eat dill pickles for dinner. So that's still my #1 theory. However, let's talk about the dill pickles. DD *loves* garlic and consumes a lot of it. I put it on her veggies, she's been eating a jar of dill pickles a week, etc. This is my new #2 theory. Is there any way that garlic, or something else particular to the pickles, could smell like syrup when the body breaks it down?!? You all probably think I'm nuts by now.

  • OK my husband was randomly telling me today that our daughter smelled like maple syrup.  I have no idea what's up with that.  And no, she didn't eat any pickles lol.

  • Mine reek hardcore because they ate the Lil Crunchies new flavor, Cinnamon Maple. Like, smelled for three days.
  • Does her urine smell like maple syrup by any chance? If so, you probably want to talk to her Pedi, since that's a symptom of a metabolic disorder called MSUD (Maple Syrup Urine Disease). Yes, that's what it's actually called.

You really like using that emoticon, huh?

  • Well I know that when I was BF I took a lot of Fenugreek and I smelled like maple syrup all the time, whatever that means!

  • I've noticed that sometimes DS smells like maple syrup too! It's not all the time though.

FWIW, I use a garlic often when I cook!

The smell of those things make me want to vomit. I cannot buy them for DS.

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • I should have clarified that this is a follow up to a post last week, so there's more details/backstory that I didn't go into tonight. In short, I said how DD randomly smells like maple syrup and that I've seen other people post about it before. A bunch of other people agreed that theirs do on occasion as well, so we mostly agreed that it must be normal for some kids. It's still really weird and perplexing, though. I have this theory that it's related to teething. My DD definitely hasn't eaten anything maple flavored.

    Oh, and don't google it.

  • No, I don't take fenugreek. No, she doesn't have Maple Syrup Urine Disease. No, she isn't diabetic. The smell comes from her pores, not her urine (like, her head smells like it). Based on all the replies to all the times I've seen this topic posted, I don't think all our kids have Maple Syrup Disease.

  • I'm gonna have to say no. We do eat garlic-filled foods in our home, but not pickles. He doesn't like them that much.
He smells like maple syrup on days he has bland foods, too. So..I still have no clue what it is.
  • I have noticed this too from time to time.
  • DD smelled like syrup today.  She has a couple times before.  I took her pjs off and they smelled like it.  So wierd.  No pickles here, she is getting some teeth though.  She's got her 15 month appt on Monday, I'm going to ask a professional!  lol

  • This has me kind of intrigued.  Someone said they used to smell like maple syrup when they took fenugreek.  On wikipedia it says the fenugreek seed is often used in pickles.  So there must be some connection with the pickles.

no freaking way. I'm a genius! ;-) I am SO intrigued now... Just studied the ingredients on my jar of claussen kosher dill pickles, though, and the only thing that could fall under is "spice", which is pretty wide open I guess. There's also oleoresin tumeric, which I have never heard of and have no idea what it is. Anyone?

  • I never BF or took fenugeek or whatever you call it. DD has never had pickles. She has smelt like maple syrup as well. On her head that is.

Eh, not so sure there's a relation to my pickles afterall. I'm finding that it's commonly used to make pickles in India and Asian countries, but I don't think anything in my Claussen's is related to fenugreek.

Interesting point to note: When I googled "dill pickles and maple syrup smell", this thread was the first result that came up! ;-)

  • DS's pajamas often smell like maple syrup. It seems like it's only in the mornings. His regular clothes never smell like it.
