Anyones little one Thumb-sucking, and refusing the paci?

DD just started refusing the pacifier and only wants her thumb! I don't know what I can do, I just don't want a thumb-sucking 2 year old down the line...

  • Yes and I don't know what to do about it.  DH sucked his thumb till he was 9.  Yuck!

  • DD's newest trick is to have her thumb in her mouth with her paci.  I don't know how she does it or how to make her stop.  She will aslo take her paci out of her mouth and insert thumb.  She just started this a few weeks ago.
  • Yes, and I believe it has to do with teething.  My LO sucks/chews his finger so much he has a blister!
  • Yep. Here too. And I have no idea what to do about it. I guess we'll worry about it when we get to that age? For now everything I try...there's just no stopping her! DD1 never did this. She didn't suck her thumb, refused a paci, it just wasn't an issue. So now I'm clueless!

  • PS: is the shirt in your siggy pic from Target?  If so, I have the same one and I love it!

  • if DS's other thumb falls out of his mouth, he searches for the other one. sometimes he sucks both at the same time. he loves his thumbs.

  • No matter what we do, DS will no longer take his pacifier, either.  He never really took one from me (I think he just knew I had something better to offer).  He is all about his hand, and he is starting to put his thumb in his mouth to chew on it... it is heading toward thumb-sucking, and I don't know what to do.  I don't care if he sucks his thumb, but I am scared of the weaning process because you can't take a thumb away like you can take away a pacifier.

  • We have this problem too and we do NOT want him sucking his thumb, so I took one of those no-scratch mittens and put it on his hand (he only sucks one thumb). so far, so good :)
  • Yes. DD is a thumb sucker, she's never taken a paci everytime I tried to give her one she would just spit it out. She usually only does it when she's tired and going to sleep so it's not that bad. And I really don't know what to do about it since it's a self soothing thing for her. I figure we'll just deal with it when she gets older if she doesn't grow out of it.
