vomiting soy formula?

I'm trying to transition my kiddo to formula since I have to stop BFing. I have been on a dairy free diet so I figured our best bet was to try soy formula. Starting last evening, I have been giving him bottles of 4oz BM and 2 oz soy formula and he has thrown up (not spit up) no less than 4 times after every bottle. I don't think he's thrown up all of his feed but certainly a large percentage of it. I know it's not normal to vomit this much but I am wondering if he's just getting used to the formula (since his belly has never digested it before) or if it's a sign of an allergy to it. I eat a lot of soy based products and he has been fine with my BM so I'm not sure. Any ideas?

Re: vomiting soy formula?

  • You shouldn't mix EBM and formula: pedi's don't know how it alters it.  When we had to do both we gave them in a separate bottle.  One would think it's all the same since it all goes into the same tummy, but our pedi said never to mix and several of our friends were told the same by their pedi's.  GL!

  • We tried the same thing (not mixing, but soy formula based on me being on a dairy free diet). DS did exactly the same thing, projectile exorcist like vomiting 2 hours after he ate. When we called our pedi she said this was a sign of a soy allergy.

We finally tried him on Similac advanced, he's been doing great!

Similac Advance is milk based, right? My kiddo is still really sensitive to dairy- I'm hoping we don't have to move to something like Alimentum or Nutramigen :(

  • My LO had the same problem with soy formula and is sensitive to dairy, my MIL gave her a bottle of soy formula while watching her and she projectile vomited about 2 hours after having it.

My doctor suggested trying Similac Sensitive which is lactose free and she's been fine with that... I'm not sure how severe your LO's dairy allergy is but you might try that one?

  • Probably allergic to soy... call your pedi and see if they have samples of the nutramigein or another formula they recommend... that way you don't have to pay to experiment
