Another FFFC

I HATE when people try to push their viewpoints/agendas on me... like for instance, me posting a question about my pet's behavior and someone responding by telling me not to call my dog a Cockapoo (even though that is what he is) because that is not a real breed.  Who cares?  Does that have ANYTHING to do with my question?  I can call him freakin Snufalufagus and it wouldn't make a difference.

Live and let live... attempting to shove your viewpoints down someone else's throat will not win you any converts, it will just piss people off and turn them off to to your message.

Ugh.

Haha. I don't care. My family is the same way, we have a hybrid and she is a Shellian (Shelty/Pomeranian)  My parents are like "she's a mutt" and we are like "well we paid a lot of money for our "mutt"" its so annoying, especially when these breeds are beginning to be recognized, and they are actually healthier

  • That is so annoying. You're right, who cares. What does she suggest you refer to your dog as? Is a child of a white mother/Asian father (or vice versa or any other combination you can think of) not a "real" human? Might be taking it a little far but it's the same principal.
  •  Why does someone care what you call the dog?  It has nothing to do with the treatment of your dog!  My parents have a yorkiepoo (sp?).  I'm pretty sure that by calling her that, I am in no way violating the dog's rights.  Seriously, people need to get a life!

Incorrect.    Go check akc.org and find try to find any "cockapoo," or any other doodle on there as a recognized breed.    Inaccurate information like this is exactly what supports sh*tty breeding practices.

No one said anything about the dog that she has. I just asked her nicely to call it what it is, a mixed breed, rather than a designer dog name. It is pets board etiquette because so many of the pets ladies are involved in rescue. Calling a dog by a designer breed name actually perpetuates the myth that those mixes are actually breeds and, sadly, helps the puppymill industry.

  • I wasn't around to see the rest of this thread yesterday but I would have bet any amount of money that the people I was referring to would have followed me over here to continue explaining why my dog should be called "x" rather than "y" (continuing to do exactly what I was referring to--forcing their viewpoints rather than just letting it go).  Unbelievable.  Nothing like a little predictability.

    LOL.  No, it's not.

  • I'm not really a pet person so I have no idea what you are talking about.  However, I'm not sure why it matters what you call your dog.  Seems pretty silly to me.

It may seem silly, but it really is a larger issue. Calling dogs by silly "designer breed" names perpetuates the myth that they are actually a breed (which one of the posters in this thread seems to think that they are). Until the dogs breed true for generations, which has not happened, they will not be a recognized breed by the AKC.

Many of the women on the pet's board are very into dog rescue and see the aftermath of puppymills and BYBs every day. They try to save as many as they can, but thousands of dogs are put to sleep every day due to pet overpopulation. Breeds are being watered down and bred with terrible health problems in order to make a quick buck.

The Pets board is for RESPONSIBLE breeding and adoptions, neither of which the OP looked into when she paid too much money for her fancy mixed dogs at a pet store while thousands of other dogs died in a shelter.

So why is it a big deal? Because if even one person changes their mind about buying a dog from a pet store or a BYB and rescues or goes to a responsible breeder instead, then the pets board has done a little good.

  • Here is the OP - if you can see, originally, I asked her nicely (I even said please) to call her dog a mix. She got all huffy and came here to vent.

thanks for the info in your original reply.  i'm going to google when i get home.

and i learned something new today.

some good does come out of it.

  • I am not huffy... you are just furthering my point.  I never once said ANYTHING about supporting back yard breeders, pet stores, mixed breeds, etc.  You don't even know where I got my dog from.

I asked a question on the Pets board and you answered me (which I appreciate and will look into), then attempted to force your agenda on me along with it by telling me not to call my dog by a certain name.

Kind of like when non-meat-eaters insist on showing meat-eaters how their food is killed/prepared... probably not going to have the desired effect... just going to turn the person off to the point all together-- no matter how valuable it may be.

  • Calling your mixed dog is supporting those practices (seriously. I've mentioned that a few times). The first time was merely a request to call your dog a mix. Not to push my "agenda" on you.

And I haven't shown you the piles of dead puppies that I could. I mean - if you want me to, I totally will show you what you are supporting, but I thought that maybe reasoning with you might work without the shock value of the thousands of puppies dying every day.

To the other poster - thank you for reading all of that. It really is a much larger issue than most people realize.

I don't live in a hole.  I am aware of the treatment of dogs at puppy mills and in many cases by backyard breeders.

Obviously you are an intelligent person so I am thinking you understand what I am saying here, as I understand your point--- I just do not like the way it was delivered.

I actually do tell people my dog is a mutt quite often and that he is not a breed recognized by the AKC.  When they ask me what his mix is I say "half c*ck, half poo", that always gets a laugh.  Just like I alternate between calling my child Jackson, "J" and a variety of other names, I alternate between calling my dog by different names as well.

  • My dog is a mutt and I got her (for free) b/c a church member's dog had a litter. I have tried to tell them the importance of having their dog spayed (she has had another litter since and the dog they kept from Sidney's litter also had a litter...sad, sad.) I cannot for the life of me understand why this family cannot take one day off from their busy lives to get the damn dog spayed.

I'm glad to have mine, but it pisses me off that people do this on purpose and try to make money from it.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

They aren't...they are just uneducated southern farmers. I wasn't very clear about it...it pisses me off when I see puppies in stores or at the flea market. I know those people don't give two sh*ts about the dogs, just the fact that they can spend a Saturday selling them for $200 a pop and then go home and cash their unemployment check on Monday and be set for the week.

You know what?---You were polite. I posted over there expecting someone to say something about my "designer" dog (rather than answer my question) so when I saw your response I automatically got irritated, even though you were not rude and did take the time to answer me.  I apologize.  Now... on to getting my Cockadoodle/Cockapoo/Mutt/half C*ck-half Poo/Canine/Dog to stop urinating on the floor.... :-)

ETA: And yeah... as far as the use of double negatives and run-on sentences, I am seriously ashamed.  I was a Journalism major and published a national magazine and in my sleep deprived state I could not think of a better way to convey my thoughts.  Embarrassed

    Thank you!

I think calling mutts by a special made up name is just a way for crappy backyard breeders to breed and sell, well, mutts. Mutts ARE great, but there are many wonderful, healthy ones in shelters and rescues - why support horrible breeding practices, over breeding, and making more dogs when so many need homes?

Call your dog whatever you want, you're correct, but I totally judge people who bought "----poos" or some sort of doodle. It makes me cringe.
