Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby Signing Time

Is anyone using these videos? I bought them for DH and me to watch. We're teaching DD to sign. So far she just kind of does the sign for milk, I am not sure if it is just a coincidence that she is making that sign and just so happens to be hungry.

Re: Baby Signing Time

  • I have those videos too. I'm excited to use them!

  • I've not heard of these, but they sound interesting!  I may have to check them out!  We're going to start taking a class at our local library tomorrow.  I can't wait!
  • I did it w/ DD1 and plan to w/ DD2. We didn't get the videos though, just a small pocket-book. I just taught her the basics (milk, more, please, eat, thank you, etc...). It helped soooooo much with frustration since she could communicate w/ us for basic needs.

How old was your DD when she started to learn and use signs?  My DD is 4 1/2 months and we have our first class tomorrow, but I'm wondering if it's too early for her.

  • I have the first 4 dvds in the series. DD has been fascinated with them since she just before was 3 months old. She'll be 4 mths on 2/6 and she doesn't get bored with them at all. The songs and signs are very interesting to watch and I try to sign to her whenever possible.  Of course, she is too young to sign back yet. I do notice that whenever I sign "milk" she gets very excited and if she is crying theme song pretty much instantly quiets her. DD has always seemed to like TV - I think she finds the bright lights quite captivating. I think its a great investment if you use it interactively with her. It's really not meant to plop the kid down in front of and walk away - you need to work with them and they will pick it up.  I got mine via Babysteals - for 60 and it also came with 4 cds in addition to the dvds.

I wish I could remember for sure. I bought the book around 5 months but I don't think we started doing it until around 8 months.. She picked up on it REALLY fast! I mean, I would do the sign 2-3 times, in context, and she would immediately pick up on it and do it herself from there on. It's amazing how quickly babies learn :)
