nbr: horrible thing just happened

So my dd was asleep in pack n play downstairs and I fell asleep on the chair next to her.  I woke up sort of and could hear the tv, and her starting to wake up but I couldn't get up.  I seriously could not move my body and when I tried to speak I just made a sound.  I could breathe....but I kept trying to tell my body to move and I couldn't.  All that kept running through my head what was going to happen to dd.  I am in tears sitting here scared out of my mind.  I don't know if it was some sort of wierd thing that I was stuck between sleeping and waking...but I was totally aware of what was going on.  Finally after a minute or two I told my body again to move all at once and I jumped up.  I have a call in to my dr. so I can go in today.  I am just so scared and it horrified me that I couldn't get to my daughter.

  • OMG.  I hope you're ok.  Maybe you should have someone drive you there?

  • That happens to my co-worker. She has sleep apnea and she said a couple times it happened to her. I guess your body is still asleep....it is scary. She said she was actually afraid to sleep for awhile....but you always snap out of it :)
  • damn girl- that's scary! i hope your doc can explain...yikes!
  • I just said a prayer that you will be able to figure out what's wrong and fix it, and for you and your LO to be safe!

  • That would freak me out too!  Hope everything is okay!

  • That has happened to me before.  It's just your brain waking up before your body.  I don't think it is anything to be worried about.  It happened to me when I fell asleep on the couch with a hard candy in my mouth in high school.  I think it's just part of your brain knows you need to be aware, but most of you is still asleep.
  • Scary! I hope you are ok. Report back what the Dr says. GL! I hope its nothing
  • I've had this too. It's "sleep paralasys" and it's just like BeaverBeliever12 said, your brain is awake but your body is still stuck sleeping..your body is kind of paralized when you're deep asleep so you dont flail all over the place when you dream, kind of a saftey thing. But sometimes yeah, you wake up but your body is still stuck!

I get this thing called "hypnogogic hallucinations" too which is similar but it's where you're awake but your brain is kind of half-way in dream mode, so you see or hear something that isn't really there! SO SCARY when that happens!! Once I saw this freakish pig-monster-man standing next to our bed.. scared my husband to death cuz I yelled and jumped like 3 feet!

  • That sounds so scary and awful.  I am so sorry!
  • I would check with the doctor on that one, but I can tell you that during your sleep cycles, there are points where your body is totally paralyzed-- which is why you end up having dreams where you try to run, but can't etc-- so it could have been that.

But def check with the doctor just to be totally sure.  GL!

  • You can call your doctor but it isn't a big deal.  The very top level explanation of this is that when you sleep, your body becomes paralyzed.  It does this to protect your body from harm while you are sleeping.  Sometimes you wake from sleep but your body is still in that sleep state which is why you can hear everything and are aware of your surroundings but cannot move.

It happens to me often, especially when I sleep on my back.

I have gotten that a few times.  The room will sometimes turn a different color or I'll see something at the foot of the bed that isn't really there.  Once I saw a dragon lmao!

  • Thanks everyone you definitely made me feel a ton better.  I did look up the sleep paralysis thing and I guess it is common with people with migraines, which I have.  I am still going to go to the dr. just to make sure but you totally made me feel better.  This type of thing has happened to me before but never to the extent that when I tried to talk I just made a sound and that I was aware of my surroundings for a long period of time without being able to move.  UGH I hope that never happens again :)

  • I've had that happen to me before, but I didn't know that it had a name!  I learned something new today!  (I also have migraines)

  • I haven't read the pps, so sorry if I'm repeating.

Are you completely exhausted? I had that happen a few times with DD1. Talked to my doctor and it turns out I was having sleep paralysis from being so tired. When you're that tired for so long, your body will sometimes do that.

I agree it's absolutely terrifying!! I'm sorry you had to experience that and hopefully it won't happen again.  I remember waking to the phone ringing and doing everything I could to open my eyes and move to get up and I just couldn't and I laid there for about a minute not being able to move an inch or open my eyes and completely freaking out. It is so scary.
