IUI with Ovidrel and HCG

Hi!  I was wondering if any of your multiples came from an IUI with Ovidrel and HCG (no Clomid).  We are doing our first IUI next month (after 10 looong years of trying basically on our own) and I would be thrilled to be expecting more than one.  I am 37 so time is of the essence! TIA!

Re: IUI with Ovidrel and HCG

  • It does not sound like you are stimulating your ovaries at all? If not then chances of multiples are slim because you will most likely only ovulate one egg just like any other cycle.

  • Ovidrel=Hcg, so not sure what you're asking.

  • It's her first IUI, she may have just mixed that up.  ;)

To the OP:  Usually for an IUI protocol you use a follicle stimulant like Follistim; injectable, causes more than one follicle to mature so when you ovulate you "drop" more than one egg.  You use it for the first part of your cycle, I think I was on it around 8 - 10 days each time if I recall correctly. During that period, you're monitored closely via u/s so you don't over stimulate and wind up being Kate Gosselin #2.  The Ovidrel is a shot that is given once, to trigger ovulation.  You have the IUI afterwards (12 or 24 hours later?  Sorry I forget).

My IUIs failed, I got pg with my first round of IVF and am having twins.  That said, it's certainly a possibility!  Good luck.

  • Yes, sorry, I definitely wasn't very helpful.

I did an IUI with Follistim + hcg (Novarel, same as Ovidrel).  My RE was super cautious as I have PCOS and she didn't want my ovaries to overstimulate and create tons of follicles.  I was on an INCREDIBLY slow protocol (29 days at a low dose) and finally got to trigger with the Hcg iwth one follicle at 20mm and a second at 16mm.  The HCG basically forces your follicles to burst so the eggs will travel down the fallopian tube to meet the sperm. She didn't think the 16 had ovulated, but lo and behold, it did!  Twins!

If you're not taking anything to stimulate your ovaries (you ov on your own, in other words), you would only ovulate the normal one or two that you would normally ovulate.   If you are naturally a super ovulater like your maternal female descendants (i.e. it's hereditary) it's possible you could conceive twins, but an IUI with one egg won't increase those odds.

    GL!!

  • I did IUI with Ovidrel and Menopour (sp)...
  • I did IUI with Ovidrel, but I also used an injectable stim (Gonal-F).  I agree with the pp that twins are no more likely with just IUI and Ovidrel than they are without any assisted repro technology.  It's the follicle stimulating drugs that increase the chances of multiples.  GL

  • Thank you all for your responses...sorry I was confusing.  I did mix the drug protocol up since this is my first IUI.  My insurance sends the meds in the mail and I haven't received them yet.  It will be Ovidrel and Gonal-F.
