at what age do you get a definitive ASD diagnosis?

The reason why I ask is because when she was 18 months old she was evaluated by a developmental pedi and at 2.75 yrs old evaluated by special ed. school....both of them said no ASD.  Actually the developmental pedi's words were "no evidence of autism".

I honestly dont think its ASD but again I'm no expert at all...in fact no experience whatsoever.  Just a bit discourage at this regression thing.

  • Is she in school at all?
  • yes she's in school so far nobody has said anything about ASD

  • What type of regression issues is she having?
  • This would be a good question for the special needs board - but usually by 2-3. My son wasn't diagnosed until age 5, which is pretty late. His diagnosis is PDD-NOS, he's been receiving services since he was 2 for global delays, and was always labeled as "spectrumish", but the school didn't feel ASD because he didn't exhibit as many behaviors at school as home (there he was labeled as borderline with strong red-flags of anxiety and depression), they simply blamed his social-emotional delays on his communication (he was non-verbal until 3 1/2) and borderline IQ. At school he internalizes - at home he explodes.

  • DD#2 was dx'd with PDD-NOS at about 21 months old, which I know is def. on the young side. Luckily, we have a lot of ASD/Developmental specialists in our aread who aren't hesitant to diagnose simply because of early age- I know a lot of doctors simply won't provide a dx before a certain age. Some of her therapists actually question the Dx and wonder if it might be SPD instead, but at this point, I don't feel I have the luxury of "waiting and seeing"...

  • My son was diagnosed right after he turned 3. He receives PT, Speech & OT and we are looking into getting him a TSS on the days that he is at daycare all day.

  • JM was three before then they kept saying SPD, Sensory processing disorder
  • My DS was diagnosed at 4 years old (actually one day before he turned 4). Before that they kept saying that he had "Universal Delays".
