Carpal tunnel / tendonitis, anyone?

My right wrist and thumb have been killing me for the past couple of weeks, it is really painful to pick up DS from his crib, I wonder if this is carpal tunnel or tendonitis which I read are somehow common in PP. If you are experiencing this, what treatment are you following? I will probably go to the doctor next week. TIA!

Re: Carpal tunnel / tendonitis, anyone?

  • carpal tunnel will have more of a tingly feeling associated with the pain.  Tendonitis feels like a burning/throbbing/aching feeling.  I have tendonitis in both wrists from working at Starbucks back in college.  If that's what you have, they'll probably prescribe physical therapy.  It can be both painful and relaxing.  They'll tell you exercises to do to strengthen your upper arms to take the pressure off your wrists.  GL.

  • I have De Quervian tenosynovitis

Read the article and see if it sounds like what you have.  I've just started wearing a thumb/wrist splint, and have contacted a hand clinic, which is recommending cortisone injections.  I'm waiting to see my family doctor in the next couple of weeks to see if the splint helps, and what she thinks is best from that point on.

Me too.  I went to a specialist who diagnosed this and said it is really common in new moms.  I was given a wrist/thumb brace and simple exercises to do (rubber band around fingers & thumb and stretch it, repeat, etc.).  It's hard to wear the brace while taking care of her though so it's probably my fault it isn't getting better faster. Cortisone injections were also recommended.

  • Don't wait to see a doctor if you have it.  The longer you wait and deal with the pain the longer it takes to heal.  I waited 6 weeks and even with the brace (which agreed is impossible to wear when caring for LO) it's taking a long time to recover.  If it's still bad in 4 weeks I have to see a specialist for cortisone shots.

And yes, it's very common and also known as 'baby wrist'.  Sucks.

  • I had carpal tunnel surgery in 2008. the first thing they told me was to sleep in a wrist brace ( like from the pharmacy that holds your wrist in the right position) and if that helped then it was probably carpal tunnel and in mild cases the brace is all you will need.
