Another unpopular opinion

I think people go too nuts with "sterilizing"?everything. ?I get sterilizing your bottles but shopping cart covers and portable high chair covers are lame. ?I have enough junk to carry around now that I have a LO. ?If I need something sterilized then I will pack wipes or wash my LO's hands. ?I never grew up with any of these things and I rarely got sick. ?

  • Aw man, I was just about to buy my son a bubble to put him in.....
  • ITA. I did buy a shopping cart cover because I would FREAK out if I looked down and my son was gumming that disgusting shopping cart handle. *gags* I have only sterilized once. I guess I'm a bad mom, I figure hot soapy water is enough.
  • I tried to return my shopping cart cover to BRU but MIL almost had a heart attack when I told her I didn't need it.

  • I'm sorry, but babies like to put their mouth on the shopping cart and I do not want my LO putting her mouth on things that millions of people have touched.  Ewwwwwww.  I never had one growing up either, but we change as new information is discovered and new things are invented.  My grandmother didn't have an epidural or birth control either, but that doesn't mean I won't use them!

This.  I am nowhere near being a germaphobe but those shopping carts are nasty.  Plus, the cover has attachments for toys so it'll keep DD occupied.

  • After I watched a girlfriends daughter LICK the shopping cart handle I knew that I would get a cover when I had a LO. I'm not super germaphobe though, that just icks me out.

  • There's a difference between using a disinfecting wipe on a cart before use and putting the shopping cart through a sterilizing wash. It really isn't a big deal to want to use a wipe to disinfect something before you put your innocent, immaturely immune baby in it.

I don't see why you have to spazz out on them for choosing to be more proactive in keeping their child healthy and safe.

There are more contagions and diseases today that were not as prevalent when we were babies. Gee, if I didn't get deathly ill as a child I guess it's okay. That's like saying "Hey! When I was little we didn't use seat belts. No big deal to not use them now since I never got hurt, in an accident or killed."

  •  Never have been a germophobe either but over the past 5 weeks my LO has had croup, an ear infection in his left ear, and now is on round 2 antibiotics for a double ear infection. were under drs orders not to let LO touch anyone or things in public places...I'm not going nuts, just handling it with common sense.  I'm not exactly thrilled about my 5 month old being on two successive rounds of antibiotics so out comes the shopping cart cover albeit a hassle.

Well, I haven't used it yet, but the germs would constantly be on the same side of the cover.  I'm not scared of germs, but if I can avoid them I will, especially while DD is still so young.

  • I like my shopping cart cover because it has straps that go over his shoulders and DS is a fan of lunging for things. The cover helps keep him in the cart.
  • There are some really disgusting germs on shopping cart handles. Leaking diapers, raw meat, peoples gross hands all over them and they are never cleaned. It has been proven that shopping carts are usually grosser than a bathroom. Would you let your kid chew on a toilet?

  • I don't go all nuts sterilizing but I DO wipe down stuff with an anti-bacterial wipe and wash my own hands a lot.  The bottles go through the dishwasher because nowadays sterilizing isn't as necessary as it used to be (not before every single feeding that is)  There aren't as many contaminants in the tap water anymore.
  • Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew.

But, uh, I'm not so into germs. I'd shave my head before licking a shopping cart handle (and I have great hair!).

Uh...germs travel...and fairly rapidly, considering their size.

  • It's funny how offended some get by the "germophobe" label.  Just own it, people.  It's OK.

    This exactly!

I'm SO not anal about sterilizing anything, but shopping carts are DISGUSTING to me.  Just the thought of everyone's dirty hands.  *shudder*

DS sits in the cart sometimes and I don't use a cart cover or anything, but we did used to have one.  I just give him hand sanitizer when we leave and make sure he's not touching his face in the meantime.

IMO there is a huge difference in being proactive (especially during flu season) and being ridiculously anal.  I'm trying my hardest to keep DD from getting sick while she's still little, but I definitely realize that:

    1.  Germs are good, they help build immune systems.

    2.  We cannot put our kids in a bubble.

    3.  Being anal is so overrated.

  • We got a shopping cart cover and I plan to use it. Why not? It definitely cant' hurt and I don't want my son sucking on the handle.
  • I was just talking about this with someone today.. I do like the fact that the baby won't lick the actual cart, but I can't picture myself ever using a cover.  Just another huge thing to stuff into the diaper bag.  (Actually I did use one when I was a nanny and it was the biggest PITA).  I will just wipe it down with a purell wipe (the store has them at the entrance) and bring a favorite toy to link onto the cart and hopefully that will keep her attention away from the handle.

  • I liked my cover with DD#1 just because the seats in the carts look really uncomfortable to me and my cover was nice and cushy. I also think there is a big difference between being a total germaphobe and thinking shopping carts are gross. My friend's LO got hand foot on mouth from a shopping cart. Blech.

I'm DEFINITELY not a germaphobe (don't use antibacterial anything at home, hardly, don't sanitize stuff, etc), but shopping carts are just nasty.

  • I would feel more uncomfortable with my babies mouth on something that had just been wiped with antibacterial wipe.

There are theories that autism is more connected with antibacterials than vaccines.  How's that for flameful?

I'd rather put my DD is a comfy cover than worry about it.
