My idea wasn't THAT cockamamie, as it turns out, LOL.
A google search revealed that pumpkin and butternut squash are so closely related that they're pretty much interchangeable (I suppose I could have searched that first before posting, haha.) You can even sub squash for pumpkin while making a pie.
So, that being said, I have a double batch of these in the oven right now:

I did muffins instead of a loaf, but same difference. They smell good and the batter tastes pretty much just like pumpkin loaf/muffin batter would taste. I'll have to give you the final verdict once the kids taste them; I'll have four kids and a mom friend over for a playdate in about 20 minutes so I'll have to let them be the final judge, LOL.

I've been a baker for a long time, and I have always used pumpkin, butternut squash and sweet potatoes interchangeably.
No one has ever commented on a difference.
